Xiao Zhan Continues to Suffer Backlash from the AO3 Controversy

Xiao Zhan Continues to Suffer Backlash from the AO3 Controversy

Since February 26, Xiao Zhan has been dragged into a controversy that he has no control over. Access to a popular American fanfiction website, Archive of Our Own, or more commonly known as “AO3”, was shut down by the Chinese government due to reports about its explicit content. Chinese users could no longer access the site. It’s reported this was the result of Xiao Zhan’s fans’ reporting over a particular fanfic written by a “BJYX” (Bo Jun Yi Xiao) fan, a name coined for CP fans of Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo. His fans also reported LOFTER, a Chinese fanfiction app, and Bilibili, a video streaming site that contains a lot of CP fanwork, to the government for explicit content. A lot of the works on LOFTER and Bilibili were subsequently removed or censored.

So what was the big fuss?

It all started on February 24 when an author posted a link on Weibo to the latest update of her fanfic housed on AO3 called “Xia Zhui” (下坠), starring Xiao Zhan and Wang Yibo. Xiao Zhan’s character is portrayed as a male dressing up as a female prostitute with gender dysphoria and wants to transition to female. Wang Yibo plays a high school student who falls in love with Xiao Zhan’s character.

Xiao Zhan’s fans weren’t pleased with the content of the fanfic and they started collectively reporting AO3, LOFTER, and Bilibili to the government on February 26. Defenders of the fanfic have said that Xiao Zhan’s fans jumped to conclusions and deemed the fanfic as “perverse” and “dirty” without even reading the actual content. Many users and visitors of the sites were outraged and started blaming Xiao Zhan for indulging in his fans and not “guiding” them properly. Even though Xiao Zhan didn’t have a say in any of this, those affected by the shutdown of AO3 and censorship on LOFTER and Bilibili targeted Xiao Zhan in retaliation for what his fans did.

Xiao Zhan Wants His Fans to First Focus on Living Their Life Well

On February 27, all the creative communities teamed up to strike back against Xiao Zhan and his fans. These netizens became anti-fans, started attacking him on Weibo and threatened to boycott his endorsements. They left comments on each brand’s accounts saying they will not buy any of his products and don’t want to see him as a spokesperson. They also lowered the ratings of his works and left bad reviews on Douban. They reported the use of “Peter Pan” (小飞侠 or xiaofeixia), the name of his fandom, to Disney for copyright violation.

Chinese users’ access to AO3 was shut down on February 29. Authors on these platforms reportedly had to change their account names or abandon their accounts altogether in fear of getting in trouble. Some claimed they lost their livelihoods and income as this served to be a side hustle. There were even reports of some people attempting to commit suicide.

On March 1, the Chinese government performed a purge on the internet to ban online violence, explicit content and discussions, and “human flesh search engine“. Some fans said the shutdown of AO3 was inevitable due to the official purge on March 1 and that their reporting didn’t contribute to its closure.

Heated Debate Amongst Netizens Over Rumors of Xiao Zhan, Zheng Shuang, and Ju Jingyi Starring in New Drama, “Chun Ri Yan”

Xiao Zhan’s studio and his international fan club issued apologies on March 1 for what had transpired and taking up public resources, but that didn’t quell the creative community one bit. His apology trended at number one on Weibo’s hot search list with over 13 million mentions at one point. His international fans showed support by starting a hashtag on Twitter, #WeLoveYouXiaoZhan”, which was trending worldwide and had over 200,000 Tweets at the time.

Entertainment industry weighs in

Billionaire bachelor Wang Sicong, who owns the Banana Culture entertainment company, liked a long post penned by someone affected by the shutdown. She explained the fanfic was not violating AO3’s terms and what his fans did had “killed off the support from different communities of ‘passerby fans’ that would’ve been around when his fans eventually leave him.”

HunanTV director of variety show, “Back to Field”, Jin Jiang, wrote a post after Xiao Zhan’s team issued an apology. Her post read, “On March 1, the super advanced edition of the internet management policy went into effect. The innocent became the outlet for those venting their anger. This is the best era and also the worst era. It’s better to understand the origins of the situation than to be incited by meaningless anger. March, let’s all work hard together to become a better version of ourselves. Hoping the gentle people will be treated gently.”

What Happened to Xiao Zhan’s Guest Appearance on “Youth Periplous 2”?

As expected, she got attacked with comments saying “Back to Field” is a rip off of a Korean show. They also went to lower the ratings of the show on Douban. As a result, she had to change her Weibo bio and not mention she was a HunanTV director.

The main person must come out to say something. There is no other way.” Xiao Zhan’s fans attacked her for not supporting Xiao Zhan especially since he drove traffic to her show by going on it and they claimed to be friends. Ma Weiwei responded back to a fan, saying, “If it weren’t for you guys bombarding me with private messages, I would post on Weibo?! You guys wanted me to speak up and this is what I have to say. He also spoke out in support of Xiao Zhan, saying, “You guys collectively taunted Xiao Zhan until he became silent. Because of the actions of some fans you guys revealed people who are against Xiao Zhan. At the same time, Xiao Zhan’s maternal grandfather passed away. His family is currently dealing with the funeral matters. Won’t your conscience hurt? Continued backlash

The anti-fans have engaged in a smear campaign, continuously bringing up his old Weibo posts and social media accounts before he became a celebrity to further damage his character and reputation, with one mentioning, “They actually found a dark-skinned Indian girl to play S.”, which was referring to actress, Tan Lina, who is a quarter Indian. A few people have left comments on other Chinese social media platforms saying, “I think Xiao Zhan being blacklisted is the only ending I am satisfied with.”

Some of Xiao Zhan’s brands have started to take down his products and promotional materials due to the backlash from anti-fans that left comments saying they will boycott the brand.

Someone used Ethereum for the sole purpose of writing this message in the transaction, which cannot be altered or deleted. The message read: “Xiao Zhan’s fans had caused the shutdown of a fanfiction site, Archive of Our Own (AO3), in China on February 29, 2020 due to mass reporting. This type of behavior unreasonably tramples on creative freedom. Whether it’s the snitch or the institutions used to ban these type of websites, these things must be recorded plus Xiao Zhan’s name should be forever carved on the pillar of shame.”

Media outlet, iFeng, came out with an article and 10 questions basically pointing fingers at Xiao Zhan for not speaking up immediately when the fan wars started on February 27. They expressed their disappointment in Xiao Zhan and accused him of hiding behind his fans, while they take the blame for him.

    2. I watched Xian Zhan on Netflx Canada drama The Wolf and it is one of the best period love drama ever. I am a new fan of the lead casts ! My wish for Xian Xiao is to continue doing what he likes to do best. If bad things will come his way , I think he should be smart and stand his ground on good things. He should get a new good trusted manager and be sorrounded only with honest positive people who is loyal to him . Family is the best. The fans are not perfect. Some are good and some are trouble makers. Gossip is gossip, haters are haters , but good fans are good fans. Just do the right thing always. Best of luck !

  2. 🙁 WHY THEY BLAME XZ on whatever being published in AO3 it’s not like xz who write that!
They all are just Haters who want to put xz down because xz is so famous rn got worldwide fans.
China is too much!it is like they caught wyb and xz in the middle of doing those things 😂
It is just fanfiction brooo grow upp the one who write that supposed to get sued not xz!he doesnt even know there are tons of fanfic about them.Even if he knew what could he do? he is so busy with all the job etc and how can u control AO3 It is a worldwide platform.
Uuhh what a terrible haters there.
    Xz literally wei ying irl.
    0% fault.
Everyone love him first then want to put him down.Haters more powerful than who believe and have faith in him.The ‘friend’ got nothing to say to the haters. He cant defend him.
I hope xz got happy ending soon and gain love from all again 🙁
it is too sad to see one’s career got destroyed because of fanfic….silly imagination moreover his career got destroyed because his haters who report the fanfic and then gov take an action 😤
uuhh so stupidd i cant stand this 🙁

  3. I see that this situation has put our dear Zhan Zhan in a very delicate situation…
But I’m surprised how people spread free hatred about people who don’t even know about our existence…
Xiao Zhan has grown and is shining more and more every day, and this shine bothers his haters.
This incident, as unfair as it is, is not enough to stain Zhan Zhan’s career.
I’m sorry that there are people who fix anything to stain the name of a famous INNOCENTE.
To Zhan Zhan’s fans, I thank you for supporting and loving him and ask you not to abandon him.
To the haters,I can only feel a lot for wanting to sully a famous person who is more and more popular all over the world.
The world loves Zhan Zhan, including Brazil 🇧🇷

  4. That’s odd. Many a fanfics are FULL of propaganda that is pro China (not exactly in words but in virtual signalling and such).

If you don’t tow the party line your booted from the site if they ever find out you don’t go with the grain and as a result most fandoms except those being pushed by current Hollywood have very few stories being written you can literally scroll down the first page and be to last month’s works.

  5. How dare Xiao Zhan’s fans still argue about his “innocence” whilest so much evidence show his team is guiding his fans group and he himself is actively paying attention to the moves of his fans group?
Don’t say “they’re just some crazy fans, you shouldn’t accuse Xiao Zhan of what they did.” They’re not just some, they’re thousands!!! Guided and used by Xiaozhan and his team. It’s really making me SICK!

Do you not feel ashamed at all? After Feb 27 you have been continuously stigmatizing AO3 on domestic network like Weibo, TikTok, saying that AO3 is a porn/pedophile website, DIDN’T YOU?
Do you not feel ashamed at all?

YES the censorship itself is to blame, but DON’T PRETEND that you who abuse it for your own interest are innocent or justified.
SHAME! SHAME ON YOU ALL, XIAOZHAN AND HIS FANS.

    1. Please… Think EXACTLY how is this all Xiao Zhan’s fault? Some people are really hysterical and into blame game for every minor issue.

        1. No matter what. Our crazyness on our idols should have some boundaries. We should not trouble our idols just because we are their fans.
When xiao Zhan has no control over action of his passer by fans ( The disguised black sheeps ), his career was affected by those immature so called fans.

Fans should bring opportunities to the idols not blacklisting and back stabbing their idols for self satisfaction and inevitable expectations.

    2. Please don’t judge an entire group of people based on the actions of a few. Xiao Zhan had 25 million Weibo followers at that time and many more internationally.

Yes, I agree that the people who reported AO3 was wrong. They shouldn’t have done that. AO3 is not a pornographic website; it is a public platform used for people to publish their stories and fanfictions. However, millions of people should not be judged on the actions of a part of them. It’s like saying that because most Texans are homophobic then it should mean that most Americans are homophobic, too, which is not true.

    3. Are you feeling ashamed of yourself?? You are really accusing an innocent person… You are so hateful… Based on action of few you are judging entire group… Shame on you

    4. Hey it’s not like xiao zhan wanted them to do that. He is the same xiao zhan the same voice and the same person. The fans did it. Shame on you that you don’t understand anything. Xiao zhan is a great actor and singer. He is so innocent to do that. I hope I smacked so sense in to you. I do not mean to be rude but think about it put your self in xiao zhans shoes. He isn’t smiling as brightly as before. Please think about it. I’m sure he is sad.

    5. WoW! So scary people. You all (Anti) attacked Xiaozhan on purposely.
Now we all international people saw that Xiaozhan is very pure and innocent because of you.
Why you want to destroyed the other life?
At first, we don’t know who is Xiao Zhan. Now we all know about him and stand with him. U know.
So disgusting and disgraceful anti fan.
You alway notice you will get back soon when you give honest person.Ok

    6. I can only feel a lot for wanting to sully a famous person who is more and more popular all over the world.
Haters, to play your audio for free, accuse an innocent man hahahahaha
Who should be ashamed are you who use a group of people to attack a famous…
      DIRTY!!! DISGUSTING!!!

    7. Bro! Just by looking at your name we can see how toxic you are. Do you have any evidence that xiaozhan/Zhan ge is behind all these? Seriously you anti fans only know how to brag. I’m so disappointed that people like you exist. If you can’t support it’s totally fine but don’t slander people or should we all assume that you know Xiao Zhan personally? I’m both cp fan and individual fan of xiao Zhan and Wang yibo. Just a reminder stop spreading rumours about him. He’s pure soul as much as I can see. Even if he isn’t, he hasn’t done anything that could possibly harm anyone. So it’s a humble request for you to be respectful. Thank you!!

      1. I really love ur comment you spoke everything I wanted to say thank u very much because is like u spoke on my behalf I hope all this can end so that our xiao zhan can smile brightly again

    8. yes!!a writer from lofter commit suicide because of xiao zhan fans harassment.
i duuno if xiao zhan is innocent but i hate his fans for fussing around and curse kobe bryant ,a lot of anime characters , so stop pretend to be innocent and shame of all of you !

  6. I am not much fan of Xiao Zhan but that does not mean I will smear his name. I am not much fond of this person because I do not know him, but even so I would let him live as he sees fit. He is a well mannered actor, who will treat every woman gently even if he might not like her. His upbringing is excellent. I see many actors today who are arrogant and nasty attitude but not him.

He is also nice to the staff and directors and producers etc…. so its natural he is kind to his fans. He is human being like us. Not someone like a god who wants to control everything and can control everyone.
AO something cause it had to shut down, they must know the consequences. Yes xiao zhan and wang yibo’s fans who are still crazy and deep in the fantasy of wishing to see them together as lovers so when they were seeing these stuff, it was like an escape dream to them, but Chinese law is still the same. Sexual content or intimacy between men is still illegal specially stuff made up about the actors.

Have you asked the actors themselves if you can write/draw about them? Have you got evidence if itsa yes? doing this stuff without the actors’permission, you are lucky not to be sued, and in jail.
so whoever were Xiao Zhan’s fans turned anti fans, you were never really his fans. You only were his fans cause of your personal fantasy. Although I might not be his fan He is a very good singer and actor. He is also human being so please leave him alone.

    1. Thank you for all the sopport for xiao zhan I won’t argue with the haters mostly I also respect your oppinions, also what other says are true, I’m a fan of xiao zhan and I wouldn’t want to make sexual fanfic because 1st of all we don’t know if xiao zhan also yibo would like those kinds of contents if i ever make fanfics i wouldn’t do such sexual intentions fanfics like what I saw here rn, we need to respect then as much as we could pls think about how they feel when they saw those kind of contents but pls let’s respect eachother were all human beings, if you hate xiao zhan go ahead, just pls respect eachother, and pls dont do such sexual contents, yes I ship them, but I would like a fanfic without sexual intentions, thank you for reading this comment ❤️

    2. I really agree with u buddy.. I didn’t completely understand that What is Ao3 And all this bad stuff about xiao zhan but one thing I fully understood is that his so called fans who bcm his anti fans are not his actuall fans…. Yeah the director of untamed also said that how kind he is.. We the international fans know him well that that the local fans.. Shame of u…. For blaming innocent souls l

  7. Why do people have to be so hateful!!! Xaio Zhan has absolutely nothing to do with what was written on archive of our own or any other fanfic sites. People need to grow the hell up and stop being so damn petty. He nor the companies he works for should have to apologize for what another person wrote on these sites. The companies that are pulling his ads because of jerks who have nothing better to do with their time are just as bad as those jerks because they aren’t supporting him knowing that he did nothing wrong. Who cares if a few jacka**ses aren’t buying your product because they have superiority issues. I’m pretty sure that it’s not going to hurt your businesses because there are more fans who will buy your products than there are petty a**holes who won’t if Xiao Zhan is in the ad. On top of that it’s keeping apart a couple that would be very happy together if people would just leave them alone. If they want to be in a relationship and get married they deserve to be happy. If they’re just friends they still deserve to be happy being able to hang out with each other without people scrutinizing them. People need to look at themselves when bullying other people because more than likely the problem lies with them not the person they are bullying.

    1. Lol I love you’re making it sound like XiaoZhan has nothing to do with his fans, furthermore calling people who don’t support XiaoZhan ‘jerks’. In fact, yes you’re right, his fans are buying his products in larger quantities to keep his business going. Buying large amounts of drinks and throwing them all out, making elementary kids buying at least 200 albums or else they’re ‘kicked out’ from the XiaoZhan QQ fan group. I also love how shameless Xiaozhans lawyer turns a blind eye on those who lost their job and even committed suicide because of his fans, making this is only a ‘onesided bullying issue’, and our poor XiaoZhan is the only victim here. I can easily tell you that if XiaoZhan wanted to, he could easily stop this online conflict before his fans started to arrange those ‘reporting operations’. He could have spoke of the unfortunate people who were affected (the ones who was bullied by HIS fans and tried to commit suicide, the ones who lost their job as a full time author because of HIS fans reporting). So can you stop acting so immature, pretending that there is NO connection between XiaoZhan and his fans

      1. He could had spoke or maybe it’s because he couldn’t speak out. Cuz it looks like he is being framed to me from my perspective. I mean , it doesn’t look like a coincidence to me. His account being hacked, news showing fans wanting to commit sucide, and the post of saying “You are nothing”. All these events are just too coincidential tho. But I wouldn’t say there in no connection between XiaoZhan. Cuz if he can spoke out and if he did spoke out, things wouldn’t be like this.

        1. I know right! Especially they chose the exact moment when his maternal grandfather passed away. He is already emotionally and mentally shaken, and this crisis is just adding more salt to the wound.

          1. The he uses his granpa’s death as a tool to shut resisters up. I don’t see his wound but his shamelessness.

        2. His studio did apologise but the haters were not satisfied with it. Besides whats done is done, nobody had thought that things would escalate to this point. Its very depressing for all the parties included.
At this moment all this fiasco has become so messy that its unclear as to who has a problem with shutting down of Ao3 website or who just don’t like XZ in general because haters are now just targeting him for their own agendas other than shutting down of Ao3 e.g; some of the antis don’t like his singing or acting or some other reasons.
Ao3 website can still be accessed through proxy sites but all this chaos has become way more chaotic for anyone to decipher why are they hating in the first place. Its just best to ignore all the hate comments and move on.

        3. Explain exactly what he could have done. This is just absurd. He is not a God. How was he going to know what his fans were doing? Do you know what your relatives are currently doing or posting online? No? Who can keep track of the online activity of millions of fans? Plenty of his own fans even found out around a couple of days later. So how could have he exactly avoided anything? How was he even going to know Falling existed? That’s not even the only pornographic fanfic about him. How come he was supposed to especially know about that one? He himself says he’s not online much. And he was in Quarantine minding his own business. Ppl act like he has cameras installed watching over every single one of his fans.
No one attempted suicide. If his fans were bullying other ppl before how come no one reported them? How come no one made that into a Hot Topic and exposed their behaviour? No. It’s after all of this YES one-sided cyber violence storm towards Xiao Zhan started that suddenly everyone want to talk about his toxic fans. Which yes, every celebrity has toxic fans. And no, they have nothing to do with whoever they CHOOSE to stan. It’s not like celebrities choose fans. It’s the other way around. Nothing the jerks that have bullied Xiao Zhan have done has excuse.

          1. True. This is all very pointless. I live in China (where Pinterest was blocked a year or two ago). I have been amazed all this time that A03 had not been blocked. It was only a matter of time with such a wealth of lovely M rated stories. Lol. The poor guy just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and made a very convenient scapegoat. But A03 was bound to get blocked just like everything else in China. Don’t like it then move…

      2. The only shameless one here is you. None that you say is true and you know it. No one committed suicide. In fact, the one AO3 writer rumored to have committed suicide made a recent video explaining they were fine just busy with life. And profiting off fanfiction is illegal everywhere in the world so whoever lost their “income” was committing fraud and a crime. Besides, there are plenty of other fanfic sites and apps. AO3 is also accessible under a different domain in Mainland China without VPN. No one cares about your lies. Please find something actually productive to do and leave your obsession with a celebrity you supposedly don’t like.

      3. Lol! I also really like your way how you are conveniently pulling the connection between xiao zhan and his fans to blame him. I mean I know the controversy started cause of his fans and many were affected by it! But he himself was also badly affected by this war! But you people just Keep forgetting the fact that the problem was caused by some of his fans and not by him!! Just what will it take for you guys to understand he is also a human being and not someone with super powers to keep every one of his fan’s actions in check! If everything and everyone could be so easily controlled the world might not have so many problems and even you would not be here stating your facts! And also you said something about Zhan not saying anything during the conflict! Somethings are easier said than done. You dont even know what kind of circumstances he was in at that time and none does so none have the right to say anything without knowing the full picture! Also no matter what he said people would ended up finding negative things in it anyway like you are doing about his late apology! Again, You said Zhan not being the only victim here and I agree on that but truly under no circumstances I think Zhan did something wrong to be hated or bashed by anyone! I’m not forcing anyone to like him. If you don’t like him just ignore anything and everything related to him. You can even hate him if you want to but don’t put blames on him for something he had no control over. That’s a humble request of mine, a fan of Xiao Zhan also as a fellow human being like you and him.

P.S:I know its been months but i couldn’t stop myself from replying on your comment. Sorry if I seemed rude! I just don’t like the way people are spreading hatred towards him.( I’m not specifically indicating you) he has come all this way and reached to the tops with his own hard work. And this kinds of things are degrading his efforts! So if everyone would be more open minded and mature, it would be great!

      4. Each and every day since Feb 27, 2020, I am impressed, amazed, sometimes amused and mostly infuriated by Xiaozhan’s team, his “lawyers” and his fans. Shameless.

      5. I understand what you mean in the sense he could’ve said something but you also have to take into account a lot of companies restrict what their idols can do or say for all we know they might not be letting him speak out about it. Idk the company he works for very well but I know people like attention whether negative or positive when it comes to things like this and most the time they don’t care if they use someone as long as they get what they want.

    2. Its really so pathetic what people do, they just go after what they hear like they have no brains to think , , I really despise those people who pretend to be allies in good times and step on others at the time of their hardships..

    3. In my opinion, people who are “fan-atics” don’t have enough to do in their own lives and wish to live other people’s lives to which they have no right. Enjoy the actors, enjoy the shows, be a fan and not a crazy stalker. This online bullying must stop. Respect each other. Respect yourself. Hate only breeds more hate and it will make your own soul suffer. Crazy fans have no right to judge others. When you die, it will just be your soul that stands trial. Nobody else is involved.

    4. People will say that there’s no proof they reported ao3, but then again there’s no proof that they didn’t. People say ao3’s going to blocked anyway but then again there’s no need to hasten the process. Not only did XZ poison fans blocked one of the few things where CN people can express themselves freely they also made it harder for CN lgbtq people to find representations of themselves in SMS. So vindictive his fans. They aly didn’t expect though the backlash he’ll receive. Your idol’s non fans can be vindictive too.

  8. This was heartbreaking to read.. There is seriously something wrong with the majority of his “fans”.
But, Xiao Zhan you are always welcomed in the U.S 💗

    1. It’s really nice to see how people are supportive, but I will assume that you people have never saw Xiaozhans weibo before he got famous. His past Weibo contain sexually harassment towards women, racism, sexism, fat shaming, anti-communism etc. Here’s some translations along with the chinese original context 🙂
      “反正都是男人的错!这草逼的世界!”
Its always men’s fault! This [slang for sexual intercourse] world
      “天雷滚滚!s居然找个印度黑女来演!”
Shocked!s actually found an indian black women to play the role!
      “(a weibo post of a girls selfie)第一张绝逼充气娃娃了”
The first photo is definitely a sex doll
      “胖子你好鸡巴贱”
      Fatty youre so cheap
      “大胆!准备开吸!明明宇宙都在淋淋的B里惹。Everyone live in linB.”
How bold of you! Really to start sucking! The whole universe is in linlin’s [insert slang for vagina]

      1. Seriously stop. You’re just another liar. I’ll bet you don’t even care about AO3. You’re just another hater with your disgusting agenda.

      2. Owo! You must have a crazy amount of time to come up with this! How come it hasn’t become a hot topic yet! Go ahead and spread it cause only fools with no brains will take the bait! Also you must be one of the crazy stalker to even trying to dig up his past! I mean I stalk him myself to a certain extents as his fan but never could I reach your level! Bravo!

      3. Ha, and what has anything to do with his past Weibo account? He was in a lot of controversial rumors so he must be a bad person?
Let me tell you, everyone is like a society puppet like go with the flow of everyone else’s step, what you read, what you hear is what you must believe, so naive 😂
A BigBang member was tangled up in some big controversy about drugging and everyone talked about it ALL THE TIME while he was guilty BUT when he was proven innocent a few months later EVERYONE turned their heads and just stopped talking, ha pathetic.

He isn’t the bad person here. How would he have known what his fans were gonna do? does he use AO3?
Does he read fanfics of himself?
How would he know what is happening until it becomes big (which is when people start to blame him for not doing anything in time.) He has a life, he would most likely be busy more likely because he’s a star and he doesn’t pay attention to fanfic sights.
He cannot control people and why must he take blame for their action? His fans must rethink what they do before doing it because they really hurt their idols and rethink if it’s actually necessary to commit suicide.
And under copyright law, fanfics are actually illegal and if your making profit off it. If they really dream to be writers then work for it, study it, print yourself your novel, make a name for yourself or else depending on writing books in a fan fiction site then get angry because it was taken down, blaming them for it, it must be a sign to do something with your life. And if it’s because you lost your enjoyment writing and reading does not mean you can hurt the wounded, cyber bullying has no excuses. He has already apologized, what else would you have want him to do? Bow down and kiss your feet for what his “fans, not even him but his “fans” did?
Giving sadness and depression to the innocent for such a little thing. Maybe if you guys had more things to do with your life, you wouldn’t be so angered, maybe this is all a sign.
If he became depressed because of it and many other things you don’t know is happening to his life, and if anything happens to him then what? Will that feed your satisfaction? Can we blame you? oh but I bet you guys will be like, “serves him right.”, “We didn’t do it.” Like do you guys know that your not any better? Threatening, assuming, being close minded, hating, cyber bullying is no different then what you assume “he” did. In fact, you guys are way worst. Trash and shameless, you all.
That was just a fanfic sight that got taken down like many other things in China but you guys are literally ruining a life.
No one even died but thats what they said so you must believe it so that it makes him look worst, In the name of death.
Plus, you guys are just going along with society, This is a problem for the Chinese fans and people because it was banned in China, not in America.

And if you actually knew about Archive of our Own it literally says “Non-profit” so how did they lose they’re job from it? They’re not making money from it. It’s all entertainment so they can find something productive to do or something else that’s entertaining instead of hating because you lost your entertainment and if you have no other source of entertainment then again, you need a life. If you like writings then go write or use another book writing app that’s not banned.

        1. I love Xiaozhan, am his fan and I bet he doesn’t know me….but why are people hating on him for something that’s vclesrly not his fault. Some of these people are just mad with Rage.

      4. You heard it somewhere or you stalked him? I bet you’re just a hater because either a fan will stalk or a hater will stalk. You guys only need a reason to spread hate and toxicity. Literally you researched a lot just to express your hatred. If you don’t like him then just don’t watch his ads, videos or dramas. Why are you spreading negativity? And a friendly reminder “Xiaozhan is very respectful towards everyone”. So stfu!

  9. It’s kinda funny. Because they can not even blame their own government for banning it 😀 They are just using Xiao Zhan as a scapegoat. I hope he won’t suffer much more from this.

    1. You are right. They can’t even blame their own government for banning art and creative writing.
Because of some people who complained…why read if you don’t like it? no one forces you. Read what you like and let others read what they like.
People need to understand that an individual’s free will cannot impede on another’s. And that karma exists. What harm you do, it gets back at you.
Xiao Zhan, you are supported and loved. You continue to be the kindhearted man you are. Do not take their words to heart, they are mean and petty.Stay strong. You don’t need to apologize for anything. You did nothing wrong. The ones who need to apologize are the cowards who reported on fictional work.

      1. You’re not wrong, however, this is not what happened. The fic depicted Xiao Zhan as a pedophile and contained graphic sexual scenes. Content like that can exist in AO3 of course. Although pornographic fanfictions about real people are illegal, as long as Xiao Zhan didn’t sue, the fic could stay on AO3. The real problem was that the author of the fic posted the link to her fic on Weibo and Weibo has strict policies against anything pornographic. Some of XZ’s fans asked the author to take down the post and she said no so these fans reported her Weibo account. There’s no proof they also reported AO3 itself but either way the author’s Weibo post plus the report of her account most likely attracted the attention of the government. There was no reason for the fic writer to not use the names of Wei WuXian and Lang WangJi instead.

  10. I’m not a very big fan of Xiaozhan, and i don’t know him, but I really want to tell these people that cyberbullying is wrong. So what if it was Xiaozhan’s fans? Why does he need to apologize for something someone else did, which, btw, ruined his image??? Nobody deserves this much hate, its so sad to see the world going along with bullying people.

Why push someone when they’re already down? These people honestly need to find some better things to do instead of hating, cyberbullying leads to suicide! Remember what happened to the poor talented Sulli! Do not let it happen again!

The dead receives more flowers than the living, because regret is greater than gratefulness. Do not try to turn back when it’s already too late, everyone should have the right to live their life their own way!

I don’t care about the fact that XiaoZhan acted in my least favorite right now, all i want is so justice in the world!!! Yeah I’ll admit I wasn’t his greatest fan, but its just purely disgusting to see everyone going along with the bullies! Just because you hate someone, doesn’t mean you should totally bomb their entire life….

This is sad, I’m more disappointed than angry. I wish the world would change and stop pointing the fingers of blame. I’m done, you people hate if you want to, but really, in the long run, all that matters is a kind and gentle spirit.

    Do not hate, instead, observe.

    1. Yup, I agree with you. I also not Xiao Zhan fan you all haters nor fans can check my social media account. I just really like the novel so I watch the drama an anime. Then I search the actors and read about this. Btw I think Xiao Zhan himself is not an FBI or CIA that know everything that’s been going on online at the time. Though his manager etc should keep what’s happened outside. That’s their work ya know. And I also want to say something to his fans. Are you sure you’re not a haters instead or may be your brain just stopped function for a moment? Every work especially about writing fanfiction is a kind of advertisement ya know. Especially on fanfiction wether it’s legal or illegal do you care as long as you get more endorsment. Not right now, he lose more than what he gain. If you(fans) think BL is a blasphemy for him(XZ). Let me tell you clearly. The Untamed is an adaptation from a BL novel. Are you stupid?

And XZ himself is tied to his management I don’t think he can just give an answer as he like. So Hey managent I think you need to hire someone with a good judgement. So something like this wont happened again in the future. You couldn’t control XZ fans but can’t you give a better respons? It’s not goverment error I think, they just do what their work supposed to do. The one in the wrong is, if you don’t have a capability but try to shoulders it on your own that mean you are stupid. You can ask help or your EQ and IQ collaps?

Then for the haters, come on guys. This is more than what he ‘deserved’ right? I’m sure XZ or his fans already know the consequence. When the fans report the writer nor when XZ keep silent. I mean uh it’s not that easy to let it go, but before you get the bad ending I think it’s better to stop when you’re still the winner right?. Or you will change to become the villain some other day. Ya know villains is just a Nick name to those that do bad thing the most. It can change position. Not static in one place. Ah, I didn’t threathening. Just stating the fact in life.
Isn’t LW fans a gentle one. They didn’t do anything rash. Love you guys.

  11. Reading this makes me so sad that I am compelled to create an account and respond.

Xiao Zhan is the living embodiment of his character Wu Weixian. Where his character was unfortunately chosen as the scapegoat by the evil mastermind who orchestrated the entire plot of The Untamed, there is a similar parallel happening in his personal life.

I hope the people who currently hate him can step back, remove their hate goggles, and look at this situation objectively. I don’t know him, and I cannot speak on behalf of his personality, but what I do know is he is someone who has worked hard to get to where he is now. His current spike in fame and popularity come with a heavy price, and that is the burden of maintaining his image. The price of fame is something the general public cannot comprehend and fathom. Maintaining a positive public image by being a kind and caring person, and doing no harm are things within his control. The more a person has, the more they have to lose, and the fear of losing the public’s positive perception is crippling for anyone whose job is in the public eye. His fans’ actions, though they are not reflective of his morals and values, unfortunately have a profound impact on his career. Step back, and think about this objectively. He has no direct action in the closure of that A03 website. The closure of the website is a result of government regulations, which means regardless of whether Xiao Zhan’s fanfic was involved or not, the A03 website has still violated government regulations and thus susceptible to closure.

I hope that Xiao Zhan can rise above this. His silence is the focal point of hate among the antis, but what do people expect from him? An apology? For the actions of some radical fans? When was the last time you had to apologize for something somebody else did? So then why does Xiao Zhan owe anyone an apology? He is also a victim.

There are so many victims in this situation. Xiao Zhan, the people who earned money off the A03 site, and the community of the website who no longer have access, but at the end of the day, they are all victims. Be kind, be good, be understanding. Do not hurt others because of blind hate.

    1. I agree with you 100%. Your comment was detailed and explained the controversy perfectly. I just want to add my bit to this comment that hating someone is so easy that often people don’t take into account to what degree of a harm can their words do to the subject of their hatred.
I can understand the initial anger and backlash of the public as I am myself an avid Ao3 reader but with the passage of time this whole fiasco has been turned into Fans vs. Antifans war. Spewing and spreading hatred online will get them no where. If the haters are truly affected by the Government’s action they should protest against the Government, the only Authority who has the power to solve the said issue. But nobody has raised any objection with the Government.

When a website gives you an option to “Report” it means that there are some regulations and policies that the user has to abide by, otherwise their comment or work will be removed or blocked; same goes with the Government, if any Government has taken an action against any agency it means that the said agency is doing something against the general law set by the Government. You protest against the Government not against the third party, who doesn’t have any clue of what happened behind his back.

Xiao Zhan is clearly a victim here along with the Ao3 community and what XZ is suffering online comes under “Cyber Bullying & Harassment”, this is a punishable offence.

Hatred is a very extreme emotion, its not something to be used so frivolously against an Idol whose fan’s actions might have hurt your sentiments. When you disagree with an action, you object against it, you don’t try to financially harm someone’s livelihood. Such is the case in this scenario. All those production companies and brands that cancelled their contracts with XZ has set a very dangerous precedent. In the future some other idols might also get targeted by the netizens hatred, so would these companies terminate their contracts with them also? If yes, then that’s wrong. Morally and Ethically wrong. Basically what you just prove here is that you will eat at the expense of their fame but if they tumbles even slightly we’ll drop them off with a second thought. Thats greedy and ethically wrong.

This is a very serious issue. All these brands and haters should tread carefully. This is a human life we are talkin about. Someone’s career is in question here. Xiao Zhan is not liable to apologise for something he had no control in whatsoever.

I have read some extremely vile comments and article relating to XZ that made me mildly depressed and when I am so deeply affected by this whole scenario I wonder how Xiao Zhan’s mental health is faring? Have they forgotten Sulli so quickly? What would they do if XZ gets depress from all this negativity. Who will take responsibility then? There should be a rational solution to all of this.

      1. Honestly that was so well said. When I read articles etc about the situation and I see posts with so much hatred about him even though I wasn’t a fan, I feel depressed and anxious when I try to think how it would be to be in his shoes. How much more can a person take it being lashed with so much hatred . This whole situation was never his fault in the first place. And yes I can’t guarantee for his personality as I don’t personally know him but it is cruel to watch your dream and everything that u have worked for so hard to get crushed overnight because of a careless action of some narrow minded people. Everyone’s a victim and the situation has gone too far for no reason with everyone now just pointing fingers and threatening xiao zhan. And honeslty do they think that if he knew in the first place he would have let them do it knowing that his career would get badly affected? Just mind ur own business and try doing something productive with ur lives instead of sitting all day and thinkinusually. g ways to hurt other people. You don’t like him then that’s your business, don’t watch his shows and don’t listen to his songs, noone made you. He is a real person with actual feelings. At least respect that.

    2. Correcting your misconception on ao3 from an ao3 user:-

      1. Website was based in US, and it is legal over there. ao3 themselves have a team of lawyers to make sure writers have freedom to write fanfic and they wont be sued on copyright.

      2. ao3 was not closed or shut down. It was just being blocked in cn.

      3. ao3 is not a money-making website. The writers are and were not paid to have their fics published.

  12. These ‘fans’ can’t take their shit to the government that banned their freedom so they took to xiao zhan and made him their scape goat. Zhan wasn’t the one wjo banned ao3, it was the chinese government. Addicted shang yin show was discontinued and the two main actors were banned from meeting in public by the Chinese government. These fans are just petty and ridiculous, the international community is laughing at them.

  14. Wow, this was really an eyeopener. I’m not even a fan of this idol, but i feel bad for him. Those who claim to be “fans”, you guys need to change your title to psychopaths! Whoever this person is, that reported the fanfic is NOT a fan. That person is a PSYCHOPATH! You don’t like the fanfic, DON’T READ IT and MOVE ON!! Reason why you’re a PSYCHOPATH is, YOU WENT OUT OF YOUR WAY to not only ruin this author’s work, but you’ve RUINED your IDOL’s CAREER!! Those sites were bound to get blocked in China. Don’t know why you guys acted all surprised when it’s blocked. These fandom wars are why the next generation is a bunch of useless people. It’s sad that they’re the future. It’s as sad as how Trump is handling the covid19 virus. Those so-called fans are right there at the same level as Trump’s Leadershit!

I just hope this idol doesn’t take his own life due to all this cyberbullying. The world has lost enough people.i really hope everythings works out for him.

    PHUCK ALL YOU HATERS!!

    That is all.

    1. I even can`t sleep and always think about it. I know what xiao zhan fell is. if i be Xiao Zhan ofc i will be silent also, i agree to you when you say that those peopke are psyco. Its really not fair bcoz of this xiao zhan got very bad for his carrier. I really wajt to meet xiao zhan someday, i hope xiao zhan always health and good always 😥

  15. Xiao Zhan, you have a lot of fans outside China so dont be afraid we are always here for you.
For Xiao Zhans manager, where he work with, dont be afraid to contiune to support Xiao Zhan, because majority of his fans are outside China.
For the managers of the products Xiao Zhsn promoted, you get panic when some customers from China threatens you to boycot your product. Remember China is just a small part of the world that you worry of losing customers. What about us outside China? We have also rights to boycot your product since you abandone our IDOL XIAO ZHAN.
To think of it he is innocent. I think we need to be more realistic and work hand in hand for the betterment of each one.
Xiao Zhan be strong, we will always support you. We are alrrady waiting for your next movie. Those who continue to believe and support Xiao Zhan lets continue to stand for him. As of now we continue to support the products that Xiao Xhan endorse, we only ask from you to continue to support him too. Unless he request us to boycot the products then we will do. But Im 100 percent sure Xiao Xhan will not do that. Hes not norrow minded. Thats one thing good character that he posses.
    God bless you Xiao Zhan.

    1. You do know that the profit from his endorsements are all from chinese fans, right? International fans share in those profit are very irrelevant. He needs his chinese not his international fans. It’s good for the ego and publicity to have so many foreign fans but it meant nothing in china. His endorsements won’t feel your boycott if you are not from china.

Gosh i love xiao zhan and this is the first time in so many years i got to fan another chinese idol again but this comment is so stupid.

    2. What is China Small Part? Who is lying to you? american media? China is twice the population of the European Union and its territory is as large as the European Union, the Chinese entertainment industry has even taken over North America, the box-office China movie often exceeds North America. The American government does not like the Chinese influence, including the entertainment industry is developing, so they create fake accounts to divide and make fights between the Chinese camps

  16. Xiao Zhan shines like a pure diamond. His talent and his smile shine so brightly and he has the resilience and perseverance to weather this slanderous tirade from a bunch of propaganda that is being thrown against him. It’s so bizarre to me to see people not realize this is just a fabricated story with ANTI FANs and PAID ANTI FANs at the root of it. China let others know back in November they were “cleansing” their digital footprints. To much chatter had gone back and forth over the Hong Kong riots and a giant cruse ship had pulled up to marry a whole boat load of LGBT couples and many if them celebrated that across social media. China considered both of these happenings to reflect poorly on the worlds view of them. So they decided to clean house and posted they would be doing this by the end of a march. ao3, Lofter and tons of other sites and websites were on there. People in January and February also began to have their YouTube channels blocked and many of these people were simply movie reviewer. Many if these got back on with a vpn to discuss what was happening. When Ao3 was informed by some members they couldn’t get on their site without a vpn they had their IT people check and San outside company check. They did articles as well as TV and radio interviews to point out they had nothing to do with Chinese netizens losing access to Ao3. Their IT shows the Chinese government is blocking their site shed many more companies have came out to discuss China’s censoring and cut off access to their sites as well. Ao3 pointed out Xiao Zhan had nothing to with any if this, nor did his supposed “fan” who did not like a story and complained about it or the supposed “fan” who was the writer of the story. Xiao Zhan didn’t start this fandom. It’s not his job to “censor” what a writer does on the site not what a reader does on the site. Likewise Ao3 has a user agreement that anyone who gets onto it agrees to y bring on it. It is a noncensored site. They are not the cyber police. You follow the tags on it to read what you want and if you don’t like what you read you certainly can complain to the writer but they are not obligated to make a change and the author can just close comments and not accept comments or erase any there. If you complain to them that’s fine but they just check to make sure it’s tagged. In a country where everything is censored it must be difficult to understand a site like Ao3 but critique is and has been a part of writing for as long as people have been writing stories. If a writer doesn’t want critique or comments then they turn off the comments or private the story. None of that however has anything to do with China’s government deciding last year they were going to “cleanse” their internet and all netizens user accounts of anything that did not comply with censorship guidelines and that includes speaking out against the government and most importantly any site that has LGBT friendly content. It’s not like the Chinese government hid that they were doing this. As Ao3 pointed out anyone can still view the content and their stories on Ao3 with a vpn. The fact that the Chinese government had police rush to the port the cruse ship was docked at to marry Chinese LGBT netizens should have given any netizen a clue they would be taking action to retaliate for that confusion over what people thought they could or couldn’t do. I’m sure everyone is also aware they want to contain discordance over the Situation in Hong Kong as well as they do not want netizens saying things that conflict with what the government is telling people in relation to the coronovirus. At a time China is going through a medical crisis and there’s a global pandemic there and their economy has been impacted they do not need strife with their netizens and a bunch of PAID ANTI FANs trying to harm Xiao Zhand good name. He had nothing to do with any of this. Only a very diluted person would think otherwise. Xiao Zhan is not the readers parent or husband, Xiao Zhan is not the writers parent or husband and he not any ANTI FANs teacher or mentor who should have to take his time to point out you are acting irresponsibly by this behavior right now. The world does not need to see your mean petty viciousness. It’s an embarrassment to China and anyone who has to witness. I’m not sure how ANTI FANs and PAID ANTI FANs have picked up China’s history of propoganda and started using it to fabricate stories or cyber bully people but shame on those who do it. You are creating strife and chaos in your own country when it csn least afford it. Do something better with your time than spending hate and being toxic mean slanderous and cruel. I was on a poll with people from 24 country’s recently and 1.8 million of them all voted for Xioa Zhan. The beautiful thing was that because that’s one of the sites that China’s netizens now have their access cut off to so you couldn’t even vote so that meant there were NO ANTI FANs or PAID ANTI FANs on it to be vicious undermining and toxic. The person Xiao Zhan was against in the poll had great fans and it was all actually fun. I got to see about one million comments float by in just a few hours that’s how quickly people were voting and commenting. I got to hear how much Xiao Zhan is loved in the US, Canada,UK, Scotland, Ireland, Dubai, UAE, Greece, Germany, Russia, Australia, Thailand, Phillapeans, Vietnam, Loas, New Zealand, Spain, Bukgaria and other places I had never even heard of of. Some just said what they liked about him, some said when they first were wowed by his talent. There were moms, dads, businessmen and women, nurse, doctors, pizza delivery guys, chefs, students, musicians, designers, bankers, realtors, waitresses, carpenters and even a car mechanic all sending hearts and notes like ” we’re with you Xiao Zhan!”. Xiao Zhan is the one person China has had in my lifetime who truly has not only created great success in China thru his talent but also has the kind of star power that can attract an international audience. He literally lights up the stage with that smile. It took Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan many years to get name recognition outside of their country. It’s taken BTS years of performing and world tours to get that kind of name recognition. When they go on tour they do the talk show circuit, the radio show circuit, the guest appearance on award shows and they try to make collabs with artists in those countries to help cement their name there. Yet Xiao Xhan in less than a year since the Untamed is known around the world and he’s barely been out of the country. That good will for China in a tine it needs it right now. That converts to international financial partners. That converts to an increase in China’s tourism. MDZS, GDCand the Untamed through its anime, manga, the Untamed, it’s fan meets, it’s concerts, it’s soundtracks and subsequent works and the money’s they brought in to China…all with Xiao Zhan the living embodiment and becoming the focal point people envisioned when they think if all of those works and create an important part of the image of its continued success. That’s what the ANTI FAN on her needs to think about when it comes to Xiao Zhan, China has been trying to get anime moving out of China and it has needed one thing all of this time, a focal point and someone to usher it out of the door as being able and good enough quality to compete with Japan. The author who wrote GDC got that going and the people who created the manga and anima fleshed it out but it’s because of the riviting performance and talent of Xiao Zhan it gained a focal point that usher it across whole countries that then has welcomed more. This year China was set to release 143 anime worldwide through one country alone. 43 through another. Xiao Zhan has just been dancing across the hearts of countries all over the world making them interested in China and what positive things China has to offer. This was set to be Chinss best year ever before the public chaos in Hong Kong, before the cruise ship debacle , before the virus. Anyone who uses their petty little hate messages to try and hurt Xiao Zhan does not understand eco mind or the Chinese economy. You don’t tear down one of the biggest assets you’ve had in a decade. You let him shine. Let him make your networks stronger, make your brands more money. You don’t turn on people like Gucci and international name brands who have to stay solvent themselves. You start cyber bullying them and threatening them and trying to get force them to dump their spokesperson and they will just invest less in China and eventually jump ship. It’s only in the last few years China’s business climate has seen changes and started getting more access to what the rest of the world has. Their censorship makes doing business they difficult and both producers and fashion labels have to change everything up to suit them. Whole blockbuster movie series the rest of the world get you cant even get. China made the decision in 2017 to heaviky invest in entertainment and anime to bolster its economy. Xiao Zhan is tied into both. I understand his success has raised some ugly dark jealousy from other less popular celebrities and his continuing to capture so much of the brand sponsorships makes others working including the opposing network who fears for their advertisers Lesving but rather than trying to pull Xiao Zhan down they and their ANTZi FANs and PAID ANTI FANs need to put their little piranhas teeth away that has started this whole smear campaign against Xiao Xhan. I haven’t seen one single fan outside of China who cares about the drivel they are spouting. We can’t do anything about your censorship. Xiao Zhan can’t do anything about censorship. When all of this happen he and those few people he has that he finally got so he doesn’t have to use public transportation to get about and he at least has done security so he won’t be swallowed by fans going into and airport, they were all self isolating during all of that stuff with the two fans. He had nothing to do with it nor could have done anything about it if he had. He’s an entertainer. Nor a psychic or a mind reader. He’s not omnipotent. He’s does know the millions of fans he has in China by name nor the millions of fans he has around the world. He doesn’t pass interview fans or ask for a background check or have them evelsusted to see if they are of sound mind. He certainly isn’t in charge of disciplining them. Whether it’s a country with censorship or one without it, each person is responsible for their own actions, not some celebrity they are “supposedly” a fan of. Hopefully someday soon Chinaas government will realize rather than be so concerned about people seeing some LGBT friendly content, they should be putting their time and energy into protecting the treasures that they have, such as Xiao Zhan and the businesses and brands that had started calling China home and instead create change in this toxic culture of ANtI FANs and PAID ANTi FANs who create turmoil and undermine people’s careers and the economy. These ANTI FANs and especially the ANTI FANs who are paid to cyber bully, HARRASS, create stories made of lies, half truths, putting irrelevant facts together with “key words” to incite emotionalism so people don’t think about something logically and actually look at the facts to see it makes no sense. That’s propoganda at its best and I’m sick of watching it be used against Xiao Zhan. I hope wherever Xiao Zhan is he has his earbuds in and is chilling with a cup of tea and has this all tuned out. Maybe he can unsqueeze some of his money out of the tight grip of that agent of his and enjoy a yummy meal and some rest on a beach somewhere. The Director Su Lun said of Xiao Zhan ” he is pure from his very core. This is very rare. She pointed out how very hard working he is and how absorbs the he is but also how he can truly let go of both himself and his image in creating a character, which I think is the reason he could so effectively play all of the roles within the character Wei Ying. Director Su Lun went on to say ” in him I found the meaning of “appearance reflects the personality” and the clearness of his eyes reflects the goodness and purity of his soul. Take care of yourself Xiao Zhan! We support you and can’t wait to see your next show coming out!❤️

    1. To Xiao Zhan, please brace yourself with strong mind, heart and spirit. I Don’t know yet if you believe in God, but even amidst in this pandemic time of coronavirus, you shine still perhaps in a different way. Just continue to realize of the success in your life, don’t ponder on the things that will destroy you but count on the blessings happened in your life since you started in the entertainment industry. In your past interviews you showed yourself that you are not afraid in taking this path that you chose. Just come to think that everything happened for a reason, and just continue to realize, that there is no success without failure. There is no joy if you cannot encounter sorrow. I am not totally addicted as fans, I am just a passer by in this issue, just happened to browse it, but since I happened to watch your drama so I try to put on my comment. You had the gift of your charm and your smile…just continue to share it..Live your life happily and be more fruitful. I am just an unknown reader of yours…..Take care and God bless..

    2. Hello you’ve made a few sound points, I know that Xiao Zhan wasn’t directly involved in the ao3 incident and I understand why some of his fans might be upset that netizens are lashing out at him for something he didn’t do. However Xiao Zhan is an idol (he might also be an actor but he is primarily an idol, debuting one and the majority of his fans make him out to be their idol). And idols need to take responsibility for their fans actions. I’m not only referring to the ao3 incident but also of his fans actions in the past which Xiao Zhan never addressed (silence is pretty much equivalent to unvoiced approval hence why his fans’ behaviour gradually worsened til this incident). He might be suffering the backlash now but in the past (not so long ago), his fans would often lash out at other Netizens who expressed their dislike for Xiao Zhan due to their own personal preferences or compare Xiao Zhan with other equally if not more talented individuals but would be targeted and bashed by Xiao Zhan’s fans who’d use verbally malicious words. Of course this is often the case with many idols who gained popularity spontaneously but that’s not to say that the kind of behaviour is acceptable in any way. Why people are openly voicing out their dislike for Xiao Zhan right now is not only due to ao3 but also due to pent up anger towards his fans and Xiao Zhan himself for never addressing or criticising his fans for their actions.

He is talented as in the sense that he was a successful fashion designer before he switched careers to become an idol, but who isn’t talented in this industry?

At the end of the day, idols are not fitted to criticise their fans – fans’ support are the source of income for idols. Since Xiao Zhan decided to take the path as an idol, he should live with the consequences.

      1. This is simply ridiculous. No one is responsible for anything anyone else does. Period. The whole ‘He’s an idol” thing is plain stupid. Nothing justifies what has been done to him by the cyber-bullies of the 227 group. It’s funny how you say XZ’s toxic fans (which every celebrity has btw) would attack others but you never addressed the fact that the 227 are criminals who profit on lying, spreading rumors, bullying international XZ’s fans and even scamming. They’re not just “criticizing” Xiao Zhan because of pent up anger. They’re literally infringing his human rights and abusing him. They act as if they’re above the law. Nothing justifies their actions. And how exactly is he going to control the behaviour of millions of fans? He’s always constantly reminding his fans to behave right and be rational. What else should he be doing exactly? How is he even going be aware of every malicious comment any of his fans makes online? Why not report the malicious fans instead? Would you like it if you or someone you loved had to go through the amount of psychological damage Xiao Zhan has been subjected to? He didn’t kill anyone yet ppl crucify him. And what for? Stupid fandom wars? He’s a human being just like you. What pleasure do you or his haters find in subjecting him to cyber-violence? It’s sick. And what proof does anyone have his fans even reported AO3? There’s none! Fanfics will always exist. Websites come and go. AO3 is not the first nor will be the last fanfic site. But you all are destroying a person’s livelihood and a life. It’s monstruous. The 227 are nothing more than bullies and criminals and the law will reach all of them sooner or later.

      2. Don’t know if you know, but idols in China are pretty much indentured servants to the company that owns them. They sign away several years of their life to the company, and they jump when the company says jump. The poor guy HAS NO power.

    3. I just created an account just because of your comment.
YOU are an amazing person. I just sat there and read your whole comment with one breath. You are absolutely right about this situation and I am really grateful that you wrote this.
Xiao Zhan is an amazing person – amazing soul. People are acting as if he was a God of some kind and had the power to stop this with one word or go back in time.
It is really not his fault – how could he know what all of his fans are doing? I am also his fan – does he know what am I doing right now?
Because if he does, I just want him to stay safe, stay the same and just do not let it get to him too much. I am weak and too shy, so I would not dare to say anything if this happened to me. But I believe in him, he is strong.
All of that hate… just shows what kind of people are out there.
Xiao Zhan with his smile and spirit is like the brightest star in the sky. I just hope that this darkness that appered around him will not consume him.
But, as you said, he also has fans all over the world – that part where you wrote about how many different people from different countries support him, was heartwarming, just the thing I needed to hear(read).
I wish him just the best <3

  17. To my favorite entertainer Xiao Zhan!, we an international fans will never leave you no matter what happened we’re always here to support you.
Just stay safe and strong don’t mind the haters and everything’s gonna be ok…ok…ok..so,please smile☺ we miss your smile😍we’re waiting for you ☺🤞 we’re waiting for your new dramas🤞😍 we love you my bunny 😍🥰

  18. I dont understand why people want to blame XZ for this? One thing that I understand, this is haters doing.. dear haters, if u dont like someone, just leave it. Dont ruin other people life. Personally, as someone who love singing, I value XZ talent, admireable. About that fanfic, like usual, of course some was please, some was not please at all.. but like i said early, u dont like it, leave it. Xiao Zhan, u have plenty of fan outside China as well. There are plenty of people value u, not just in your country but international. We love u.. even u happen or end up to start again from the begining, the true fan will always support u.

  19. Yo… Some fans are actually just retarded! Why speak for someone else when XZ clearly wasn’t affected by these fanfics. They just made this whole situation useless and a waste of power I guess. XZ is the only victim here and also these anti-fans… The most retarded people I’ve ever came across! Yes I’m using a rude word, but I admit I’m a worse person than XZ (not that he was ever a bad person), but he gets blamed for something he didn’t do! Educate “your fans” my ass! Nothing would’ve changed, just like anti-fans can’t see the truth behind that thick ass wall they built because of their ‘I’m right you’re wrong’ bullsht.

    1. Antis? Do you know how many people lost their livelihood during these hard times? Many creators normally have other primary jobs but during the coronavirus epidemic all the income they had was from what they could post over the internet. Think about these people while XZ is sitting on his ass getting all the money from his endorsements and doing absolutely nothing to stop his fans destroying the hard work of these people and tearing apart internet sub-cultures that was built over the dedication of so many people, embodying the things they love the most. HIS FANS DID THIS IN HIS NAME, BUT HE’S SCARED SHITLESS TO EVEN GIVE A PROPER APOLOGY. Please shut up if you know nothing about the impact of this

      1. You think he wanted this to happen? Have you ever seen a celebrity apologizing on behalf of their fans? It is not a celebrity’s job to educate their fans. XZ is not their parent nor their teacher. It has come to my understanding that the Chinese government had planned to “clean” their internet even before this. China is a heavily cencored country, they blocked other sites as well as ao3.
The horrible people who harmed creators have harmed xz in the process as well. He is not to blame. He had no power over this.

      2. Xiaozhan is not to blame for this. He shouldn’t be held responsible for everything his fans did that was wrong. So, if someone bombed a concert and their a whatever fan, then the whatever person get all the blame? Of course, the people who use ao3 are also victims, but we should not blame Xiaozhan for this, in every fan community, there are a few people who do more harm than good. but still, if we blame every celebrity for things their fans did, it wouldn’t be fair would it? Of course Xiaozhan should say something, but i don’t blame him for staying silent.

      3. He doesn’t have to apologize for any shit he hasn’t done. It’s not so hard to understand. And stop being the biggest hypocrite. You’re saying ppl lost their livelihood during the pandemic. But you all want to destroy XZ’s life and livelihood forever. He’s not a freaking god or omnipotent. He could not have stopped any of this from happening. If he could, obviously he would have bc guess what? No one likes being bullied and attacked over smt you didn’t even do. Do you even listen to what you say? Also if his fans were being so bad why didn’t any of you reporting them?

        1. WWD

Why would he need to apologize for something that random adult strangers did? Does that mean that if I destroyed something and said I did it for you, you would have to apologize for me? Lol… Awesome!

By the way, I am an A03 writer and I don’t get paid for my fanfics. Making money off fanfics is actually illegal since the characters are not actually originally created by you (copyright laws). We simply write for fun.

      4. @ WWD

Therefore, people losing money due to A03 being shut down sounds like complete BS.

      5. So would you apologize for something you haven’t done? Bro he’s too busy to know what’s going on in this world. He’s not the one to blame but still he showed his sincerity and apologized in front of media. When was the last time you apologized for something you haven’t done or let’s say even if you’ve done? This is a absurd reason to hate someone. Xiaozhan is a shining star and ofc rumours about him will spread like a fire but it doesn’t mean we are supposed to believe that. I wonder why you chose to be on the negative side. Can’t you see the best side of Zhan ge? We don’t know him personally, so if you can’t support let it be but don’t hate him. He doesn’t deserve anyone’s hatred.

  20. The amount of people defending XZ makes me want to puke. His fans are fully responsible for the online abuse of hundreds of writers and creators on Weibo (Chinese Twitter) and caused a mass exodus because these people couldn’t handle the large influx of hate comments completely drowning out their voices. XZ fans also attacked artists, video game community, online streaming sites, the anime community and so on and so on because of even the slightest resonance in their creations with their ‘idol’. It’s absolutely sickening how this fanbase has evolved and XZ has done nothing to control the situation. Don’t say it has nothing to do with Xiao Zhan and it’s only a few individuals ruining it for him. First, it’s not just ‘a few’ individuals, this was an organised attack orchestrated by an entire fanbase of hundreds of thousands against several different online platforms causing direct abuse to hundreds of creators, the loss of tens of thousands others and fear amongst all Chinese online creators including myself of such a toxic, reckless fanbase that’s ruining the things we love. If you don’t believe it, just go on Weibo and look at how many people are involved in this and how extensive the attacks have been. Second, as a public figure and an idol, XZ has reaped all his gains from his fanbase, and he must be personally responsible for what his fanbase has done in his name, especially since to this day he and his agency has done close to nothing to stop any of this but instead have dedicated their efforts to protecting his image, completely ignoring all the creators that have essentially lost everything because of him. I’m not involved in any way with pop culture and have very little knowledge about it, but never ever have I hated a celebrity more than XZ.

    1. You do know what you said mostly talks about the company and his fans right… It was already known that his company doesn’t treat him well and they even say which film he “isn’t fit for”. So lemme get this straight, you sound like you dislike his company and fans more than him. Also, didn’t you ever think that some of these things were forced on him because of his company. Like maybe not letting him apologize himself. Then like you said his ‘fans’ attacked the woman again, not him.

    2. I personally don’t believe celebrities need to take responsibility over their fans’ actions. Anyone who tried to voice their opinion gets slandered and attacked.. Including xz. I just want you to know that back in January the Chinese government announced that starting March 1st (coincidently when all of this mess started) it would be inacting new regulations against content on Chinese websites. The new rules include restrictions against “negetive” content (for example anything lgbt+). Ao3 was simply just another casualty of Chinese cencorship. I think you should check all of the facts before you start pointing fingers and blaming the innocent.

    3. Re1123 YOU ARE 1 OF THE EVIL ANTIS. KARMA will get your black heart and soul too. I never heard of A03 until they attached their name to our Xiao Zhan. XZ can not control his 24 million fans just like A03 could not control that girl Karen from leaving the walls of A03 and posting her porn fan fiction in WEIBO. where minors who blog there saw a transgender XZ having sex with a 17 year old Wang Yibo. I would have reported her dirty mind too. XZ should sue her but he wont . She slander his clean image and you and others act like XZ raped an A03 Member ,then burned her body and buried her ashes and now want him dead. I would love it if some crazy ass fan fiction turned you into a boy with a long penis and put your visuals on WEIBO. I can hear you scream ..get me a lawyer.

    4. So tell me what can xiaozhan possibly do? An Actor’s actions are all controlled by company get that on your mind. Plus I believe no-one should be responsible for the things they haven’t done but still he apologized and I feel bad how he had to apologize because of people like you. And I don’t believe in any of the bad rumours about xz because there are so many rumours. Don’t you get confused which one to believe? So I just follow my heart and support xz whole heartedly. If you hate xz that much then please stay out of this. You are just a hater who wants to ruin someone’s career by believing some fake rumours. You cannot be someone’s fan pure heartedly. So I guess you should stop calling yourself any celebrity’s fan.(if you do) And what’s wrong in supporting someone we love. Thanks for your shameless comment. We xz fans will keep supporting him.

    5. Ohh forgot to say one thing. If you want to puke then puke immediately. Don’t hold it in okay honey? Guess your toxicity will all be out by then.

  21. #weloveyouxiaozhan on twitter was hijacked by RADIO FREE TAIWAN which created this ‘eulogy’ mocking his death: “Xiao Zhan, a strong feminist fighter and black gay Muslim, walked peacefully, Taiwan mourns it, and wishes heaven has no pneumonia” .
Sarcastic tweets posted by their army are basically repetitive ‘she was a good girl. RIP! hahaha.” The page seems to have been taken down this morning and reclaimed by legitimate fans, but those comments mocking him are still scattered throughout twitter.

Seems that instigators from Taiwan started rumors and continue fanning the flames for political motives. The global popularity of The Untamed and the softpower created for China by the endearing actors isn’t what they want to see. Taking down XZ (and WYB later) accomplishes the purpose of destroying any feelings of positivity for China, and who knows what other roles they took in this smear campaign. Their mission appears to have accomplished their agenda.

  22. I am actually very scared for Xiao Zhan now. I hope he is doing okay. To block Ao3 was the Government’s decision so why are all these antis only targeting Xiao Zhan and all those people demanding Xiao Zhan to make a statement should think about their own behaviour first. Would they take responsibility if something happens to Xiao Zhan, what if all these negative reactions makes him mentally disturbed who will be responsible then huh? He never asked the world to love him, we loved him on our own, so why is it that everyone pointing daggers at him. Honestly it’s all just jealousy and envy talking. This is not backlash but clearly a case of cyber bullying, why is nobody calling it out as “bullying”. Xiao Zhan please be strong and don’t wither under this temporary pressure, your fans love you truly, you are like a precious treasure to us your international fans and we will always support you and love you. Ignore the negativity, this is all just madness, you are where you are on your hard work and strength. Nobody can take it from you. We love you Xiao Zhan

  23. Xiaozhan is a victim. He didn’t do anything wrong. I don’t trust his fan, don’t trust netizens, don’t trust entertainment industry, don’t trust Chinese govern. I’ll follow and support him for a long journey, regardless of what is happening social network. Because he’s a hard-working and talented actor. His characters actually touched my heart. #WeLoveYouXiaoZhan

    1. It’s absolutely absurd that the attack is focusing on an actor instead of a government that targets freedom of creation. Western actors have often asked for writers to cease fanfictions depictions of them, this was NOT the case. Xiao Zhan is taking the blame for actions he didn’t originate or supported. The fact the public can’t seem to understand the problem is deeper than a single idol struggling to keep his career is ABSURD. To blame Xiao Zhan is to lack the courage to face the real issue with censorship. It’s easy to blame him. Please, if you wish for freedom, collectively fight for it. Don’t use capitalism and idol culture to demonize a young man who’s the product of such an environment

      1. Well guess what? It’s because China has such an oppressive government, creators are exceptionally vulnerable to things like MASS REPORTING and harassment from his deranged fans. They ended up taking down AO3, they ended up increasing censorship and pressure on Lofter and Bzhan, getting tons of people’s works reported and others possibly put in jail. You can’t possibly brush it away with a “oh haters are dumb they can still access with a vpn its all kewl uwu”.

This shit has consequences, and unfortunately for that young man, he was the public face and reason for this hateful campaign. He’s a grownass man who was literally banking before all this. I’m sure he can deal better

Everybody knows the gov is shit. That’s why they should know better to snitch. But guess what.

You know what we’re calling his fans? Red Guards.

I hate how in the West people paint the people who are boycotting XZ as antis or some shit. Nobody cared before this. He’s some random fresh meat from the nth adaption trying to milk money off a novel taken down BECAUSE of crazy ass homophobes who can’t just leave creators in peace. It’s not his fault except that he was used as justification to tear other people’s lives and work into shreds, and he did literally nothing (in both good and bad sense).

His career is definitely over though, because this reporting game his fans played was too high-stakes and affected too many people.

        1. How can you say the government is bad? Um… maybe keep your own opinions over this matter? Because I am Asian, and I state the government is not what you say it is.

        2. You are an anti. In all sense of the world. An hypocrite too. Don’t claim to care about the livelihood of any artist when you’re ready to destroy the livelihood of Xiao Zhan who also happens to be an artist and didn’t have any say in the banning of the site, which btw, is still accessible without VPN so stop acting like all of this is about AO3. It’s not.

      2. Just check who benefited the most out of this. You will know who made this campaign to destroy him. People who said they are your friends and colleagues are the worst backstabbers. Wang Yibo Lehua and a few others will pay for this with the same pain.

        1. Wow, look what I’ve found here. So this Xiao Zhan fan is bringing Wang Yibo’s name into the story? What has Yibo done? Do you really mean it? This, now, is pure evil. To assume something without proof and to hate on someone else. Your heart must be so dark. I pity you, because with a heart like this you will never be happy and feel loved.

        2. I’ve screenshot this comment. So are you a typical example of Xiao Zhan’s fan? This is surprisingly disgusting. To bring Yibo’s name here and saying that himself and his company plotted it all. You are no difference from whom you are hating on.

        3. Please leave YiBo out of this. I don’t know if you’re a fan of Xiao Zhan but seriously stop. They’re friends. And if you fail to see that this is smt that might affect YiBo too you’re not much different than XZ’s antis. It’s not by chance that XZ is going through this after he became so popular. And YiBo is almost as popular as he is. It’s quite obvious that the next target would be YiBo. Right now XZ’s basically shielding him by staying in the middle of the fiasco. Anyone who tries to drag YiBo into this is also part of the big agenda. Don’t contribute to the cyber-bullying of celebrities and give haters a voice.

  24. All Actor and actress are human they feel both pain and sadness and every day they work so hard to be better/best in their field of work that they don’t have time to be telling their supporters/fan to go and spoil the good name/future that they are trying to build so I think they should find the fans /supporters who cause this problem and settle things between both parties and I wish and pray that fans/supporters will try their best to support their role models in a decent and proper manner so they will not have to bring problems for them in the future ✌️

  25. Why all are hating and attacking at xiao zhan? After all ,this matter is not something he did.But why he is the one suffering😢?

  26. This guy made racist comment against a fellow female artiste who is of Indian origin on social media platform. When it was exposed, her fans demanded an apology which he ignored. Outnumbered by XZ’s fans, they were instead attacked on social media senselessly. Eventually the female artiste posted a message on weibo urging her fans to “be kind and move on”. XZ’s team was well-known for “pay-for-trending” in China in hope to expand his fan-base and gave the false impression of his popularity. He manipulates his cult-like fans shrewdly for commercial gains, he knows EXACTLY what his fans was up.

    1. I’m a new oversea fans. they were really old posts that anti-fans dig up when he was joking with friends. Who never make racist or discrimination jokes when they were in early 20’s? And by the ways, someone in china already proved that they can access AO3 few days ago but no one announce it. All these haters just keep cursing on him and even make death rumors on his Instagram account. More than half of the comments is RIP. Did anyone come out make an apology to him? I will go to AO3 and demand an apology. Let’s see what will happen.

      1. If that’s true, then it was very immature and rude of Xiao Zhan and he should’ve apologized. However, it’s common sense that Xiao Zhan can’t control his fans—no celebrity can do that. The fanfiction was obviously not instigated by Xiao Zhan himself, and any actions taken against AO3, shows, companies, or people were not either. The actual issue here is how the Chinese government regulates its citizens’ creative freedoms.

        1. In the comment I saw he simply commented about her being Indian and having dark skin bc she was playing a character famous for being pale. That being said, if the actress felt hurt in any way I agree he should apologize. But this whole incident is not about that and they only dug those comments to justify the boycotting campaign.

    2. Stop lying. I read it. You people will fart out of your ass to clean Wubo’s girlfriend and stink better people.

  27. Is there any positive action international fans can take to support Xiao Zhan? Is there a way we can contribute to XZ Studio or another kind of support? He is being used as chum to the sharks but is there something we can do that will help?

  28. I’m really upsad knowing this.. it’s broke my heart.. why are they bullying him..?? He becomes a blacksheep here.. Stay strong zhan gg.. we love u always.. we love u the way u are.. U’re innocent here.. in fact u’re the victim.. it’s not ur fault.. stupid antifans..

  29. Xiao Zhan, we know surely your innocent. Don’t mind those who critisize you they have nothing to do in life but to mind others success, so Xiao, just stay calm I appreciate your being silent in this matter. Just trust in the One who created us, He has a better plan for you. Everything will come an end and the one responsible for this issue will surely be accounted. More blessings to you and your career. Continue to SMILE.

  30. AO3 supporters, people who don’t use AO3 but decided to join the gang, are like wild dogs attacking people online, just like wat the crazy fans were doing before, supporters are no longer the victims, they are just as rude as the others,i thought the supporters are too obsessed with creating “scholar works” to gain “hugo award” and didn’t hav time to cyberbully others,I’m wrong, they prefer leaving 1 star rating to XZ for “fun”.

  31. Fan behavior Idou pays, regardless of whether this matter has nothing to do with Xiao Zhan, Xiao Zhan will be dragged down. Xiao Zhan’s fans reported ao3, claiming that they were good for Xiao Zhan. Now Xiao Zhan’s domestic advertising endorsements have been replaced, and the popularity of passers-by has also dropped rapidly. Xiao Zhan’s fans, is this what you expect?

  32. I’m kinda sad w/ what happend to XZ, its not his fault, but still he takes the burnt! Shouldn’t the one who file the complaint (not to point fingers, but i bet this person is anti-fan) should take the blame? He’s not a GOD, duh, he can’t control what ppl want to do. Control his fans? Are his fans made from doll or something? No! Honestly, this cyber bullying, will this ever ends? And all of this started w/ a fanfic. A made up story! Not even a real one! There’s tons couples/slash pairing blah, blah but why this particular one?!! Its getting more and more ridiculous, and even crazier, these ppl smear his name to this day. XZ is innocent here! I don’t get it though, why ppl do horrible thing in such extend to almost destroy someone’s reputation? Is he done something wrong? Anti fans just stop sticking their nose to the place where they clearly don’t belonged, then there’s shouldn’t be a problem. Just stop this madness at once.

  33. I have only watched a single series of xiao zhan and was impressed to the point that I started following up his behind the scenes activities and stuffs ,honestly the guy is generous and awesome….here is what I want to say about this issue
For the people who blame xiao zhan look back to yourself and see if your suitable enough to blame someone maybe you might worse than what your pointing your finger at…..and for the issue of him not saying anything about this I don’t blame him “SOMETIMES SILENCE IS BEST THAN ARGUMENT” so I may have prefarably say he did a good thing….

Also, for the anti-fans who pray for his downfall this universe belongs to someone superior than us he decideds our fates so even if you would bend mountains to drag him down IF HE IS MEANT TO SHINE HE WILL SHINE…and as for the ill-wishers “what goes around comes back around” you don’t have a right to point fingers at anyone ,cause no one has ever been right afterall….XIAO ZHAN WILL SURVIVE THIS AND THOSE PRAYING FOR HIS DOWNFALL WILL WITNESS HIS VICTORY…#WELOVEUXIAOZHAN

  34. Xiao Zhan is the biggest victim here! So much bullying and all direct to one innocent man who did nothing. #WeLoveYouXiaozhan

Please stay strong Xiao Zhan, we International fans will support you always!
    #WeLoveYouXiaozhan

  35. Any endorser dropping Xioa Zhan can forget me and my family and friends purchasing their merchandise. It’s ridiculous how they allow these mobs to ruin an innocent person. Everytime one of these crazy Asian’s gets upset (look at a flower the wrong way mentality) they want to boycott someone’s life. None of the fans or members of the AO3 and other artistic sites who participared in either slander campaign can claim moral responsibility.

Truth, they were technically breaking the law being on these sites to begin with, but whose pointing a finger. GUILTY. Breaking the law is breaking the law. HYPOCRITES. Truth these sites were already under China’s censorship radar and due to be restricted anyway. Truth, the supposed fan is either fake or a flaming busybody idiot. All this outrage put on one innocent person rather than grabbing a set (bring nice) and protesting the censorship law. Haven’t read one single thing about this mob taking their outrage to the group that actually shut these sites down.

This kid just can’t catch a break. He was minding his own business, and now he’s responsible for the decisions the government had already made, and the choices a thoughtless fan/s made. I question whether or not this was a true fan of his. A real fan would never harm him to magnitude. You don’t need Dummies for Fans Behavior to know reporting a major internet site with questionable content to a censorious China is not going to have major backlash.

I have watched the Untamed everyday for over three months with about 6-8 American movies to change it up. I watch it because that single road path aint so bad, and I know what it truly feels like in real life. Xiao Zhan you really only need one to stand strong with you through a storm, but you have millions so you’re good. You did nothing wrong and shouldn’t apologize for a thing.

    1. You are spot-on that these crazed keyboard warriors are barking up the wrong tree. They are faulting someone who was not responsible and has absolutely no control over the closure of A03.

      1. Exactly they fight someone just because haven’t a real name for whoever reported it. Not even his fault just because they used his name for the fanfic doesn’t mean he can was one who reported it.

    2. zhan ge, stay strong !! I always support you! I’ll always be by your side. you can definitely get through it!! you are not alone!! we love you zhan ge!! fighting!!

      #weloveyouxiaozhan
      #welovexiaozhan

  36. All of this not his mistakes and stay strong for xiao zhan, me include your fans always supporting you ^_^

  37. Wow! I am blown away reading this. I don’t think it’s AO3’s fault because it’s a writing website and people can be creative about it with or without adding explicit content and/or using rl people or not. Neither the fans who write fanfics about YiZhan since WYB and XZ are fine with them or more like they don’t care since I guess they don’t bother reading them. If the actors don’t mind, then some fans shouldn’t butt in and file reports (DIRECTLY AT THE GOVERNMENT EVEN). I’m sure wyb and xz would say if they felt they’re not comfortable with it like what bts did. But they didn’t do anything, right? Coz I belive they don’t care at all. Also, I agree that it was too fast to shutdown a website nationwide in just 2 days. I really think the Chinese government is a group of homophobes. I really hope one day they become open-minded and accept lgbtq. I also feel sad for the ao3 writers who got affected. Although some went waaayyy below the belt and became anti-fans, we can’t really blame them. Maybe some of them love expressing their poetry art at ao3 and it became their only outlet of stress, expression, frustrations, everything and anything. So of course they’ll get mad. And when people get mad, they do the sh*ttiest and most stupid things.
AND what I wanted to say the most is:
IT’S NOT XIAO ZHAN’S FAULT NEITHER. NEVER WILL. NOR WAS. HE DOESN’T NEED TO EXPLAIN ANYTHING OR APOLOGIZE FOR HIS FANS. HE’S THE VICTIM HERE.

Yea, it’s those fans who reported the ao3 should take responsibility for that They don’t own XZ to take such actions as if it’s for his own good and look what happened?
And the Chinese government? Lol I’m thankful that I’m not a Chinese nor someone living in China. I’m not being racist here. I just don’t like the Chinese government. I really think they give people their own freedom of expression of love.

    #LoveShouldWin
    #WeLoveYouXiaoZhan

    1. I really think they SHOULD* give people their own freedom of expression of love.

      Also believe* not belive

Just needed to clarify some stuffs to not cause some misunderstandings

    2. So true I agree these anti fans need to stop and look at the big picture they are only hurting xiao Zhan iit wont change anything or bring their previous site BK…their actions won’t change anything .. It is only hurting an innocent person who got caught up in the mess without knowledge ..it’s ridiculous…what are they thinkibg? Put the blame on those who reported them and in the Chinese gov who is controlling of such content not in xiao Zhan..

    3. Don’t worry, he will be alright! He has many backings all puting their chips this year betting on him to make lots of money for these companies. Xinli media, tencent, etc..especially xinli, it needs to either meet agreed profit target this year or compensate their investors huge. Also, many of his cp fans have converted to his fandom now, so buying power should still strong now. His studio has also steadily been buying trending topics in weibo, so his news will still pushed involuntarily to users every other days whether they are relevant or just somethibg silly. Plus good or bad publicity is still publicity, over exposure over promoted is his team strategy anyway, so all this work out well. Before all this incidents, most folks in china who doesnt watch BL drama or paying attention to entertainment has no idea who this guy is, well a lot of these folks now know his name and the associated AO3. His public image probably suffers temporarily but if he is truly talented he can turn it around with good works (i had only watched him in star detective 2 guesting episodes and he just didnt do the show justice, quite underwhelming performance, so i am not convinced if he can truly win people over.)

  38. Ohh~ good heavens! what is wrong with ppl these days… they’re soo childish and immature… instead of getting angry wouldn’t it make more sense to try and find a solution? you can’t use AO3 in China thn just port urself out of the country… VPN… as simple as that… that’s how many of us get over the restrictions in our countries… what’s the point in creating such a big fuss and venting at innocent ppl… will it quell ur anger? maybe yes… will it solve the problem? no… will the Chine Gov change their rule for u? definitely no… how meaningless of these ppl to stir up trouble especially during such difficult times… everyone has their own life and privacy… it’s ridiculous to ask questions like ‘is ur internet down’ and all those… I could have internet access and just not check any of my msgs for days when I am busy and tired… grow up to those anti-fans! we all have our own lives to live and it doesn’t give u any right to demand that Xiao Zhan give an explanation for something that not only he had no control over bt also when he is still grieving just because he is an idol… pls respect his privacy and allow him solace during period… he is going through alot right now… anyone with a conscience would be able to understand that… #WeLoveYouXiaoZhan hope u stay strong through all this~ *support support*

  39. Xiao Zhan is not to be blamed. He has nothing to do with it. He cannot dictate people of what to do not think of. We need to be open minded we don’t have to attack one person because of others actions. Everything has purpose has why it happens, let’s be reasonable and not just to blame.

  42. I usually don’t comment or really engage, but this is a literal witch hunt. Instead of focusing on government censorship and the few rotten apples whose actions were the catalyst, they berate and criticize someone who had no control over the entire situation. And tell him to educate his fans? He’s not their parent. I refuse to believe these “fans” are not 20 years old or even older; they need to educate themselves first with maturity and respect. Chinese writers and creators have suffered because of them. Xiao Zhan and his team have suffered because of them. This is energy wasted. If they have that much time on their hands, maybe do something more tangible for society instead of causing others’ distress. Have some decency and propriety. This is so absurd.

    1. I must say, it is not a literal witch hunt. The government had not interested in AO3 at first instead of wanting to deal with cyber violence. It is his fans used public power to vent their own personal grudge but refused to take the responsibility for harming other innocent people’s benefit, keeping violating other people’s rights and they even made the auther who wrote Xia Zhui almost went to suicide (His fans got her personal information in the real life and threaten her). When they realized they could not control where the whole things go, they start to blame it to the government. That’s why the tag #welovexiaozhan appeared. The public power of our country is not a tool of revenge and the public resources should not be wasted in this kind of thing, especially during this special and hard time of fighting the coronavirus. This explains why almost all the people became angry and started to fight back those fans.

      1. Chinese people should blame on Chinese governments. They would do that soon or later. If Xiao Zhan’s reports to Chinese government, then why Xiao Zhan have to take reposing for that? Remember Xiao Xhan have over 24 millions of fans in Chinese and many other countries ( last week it were trending in 18 countries Not 13 for “#weloveyouXiaoZhan”international fans just want to show support to him nothing else. Since July 2019 the Untamp on air. Only 6-8 months his fans increase 17 millions. How can he take responsibility for whatever >24 millions fans did. Can you? Can I? I am sorry Nobody can take responsibility for 24 millions fans for what they did and this fandom only increase within 6-8 months. Think, a parent only got 1 or 2 children they teach them day and night every single day still kids are not turn out the way they want them to be. How can you Expect Xiao Zhan take responsibility for over 24 million fans in his fandom?
Especially his grandpa passed away. He was busy with family matters. He need to be there for his grandma, his parents, his family. If that you in that situation you will do the same family first Hello!
        International fans always love Xiao
Zhan. We be quite just because we don’t want antis get any chance to hurst xzhan.

      2. Yes, his fans shouldn’t use public power to vent their own personal grudge but what has that got to do with xz? He is not their father, teacher, brother, boyfriend, husband or son no matter how much fans fantasise. He is an entertainer – his only job is to entertain.

People have the right to feel angry, but their way of ‘fighting back’ is to target Xiao zhan (Also, if you think they care about the author who wrote Xia Zhui, you are just kidding yourself). They are demanding he retire, some even demanded him to die. They stand on their high horse saying that his fans cyberbullied other fans, so this entitles them the right to cyberbully someone else now? How is that not abusing the power of internet anonymity as a tool of revenge to hurt and violate someone’s rights? This whole behaviour is childish and disgusting.

The government not interested in Ao3 at first? If previous rounds of censorships can block wattpad, scribd, medium, slideshare, discord, dreamwidth, deviantart, etc etc, do you really think that Ao3, a lawless cesspool where anything and everything goes and is slowly gaining traction in China is somehow not on the radar? I also doubt a nation-wide ban of a website is something that takes only 2 days. They will need to gather evidence, produce reports, send it for vetting, get approval, send it to the relevant departments to execute, update across all departments and PR outlets, etc.

People just want an easy target.

      3. Your government uses “healthy and wholesome online environment for the youth” as the motto censor everything online. It actively requests, encourages, and sometimes, financially rewards citizens to report violations either to the platforms, or directly to the regulatory agency. Your government doesn’t care about motives behind reporting, only the offending content. The result is two sets of ethical moral standards. People have used and will continue to use one or the other whenever it suits their purpose. I don’t doubt some who now claim high moral ground have not themselves wielded such weapon before.

        1. I don’t doubt some who now claim high moral ground have themselves wielded such weapon before. The person who wrote that long piece criticizing XZ’s overzealous fans has been identified as a person who had led a similar movement using reporting to take down what she considered as “poison”.

Of course, the self’s moral and ethical standards become an excuse that overrides all others.

      4. None of this is true tho. Sorry but it’s not. The author of the fic was kicked out of the fandom together with the account to first report her. The author wasn’t attacked and she never attempted suicide which she herself explained later on. This is literally a Witch Hunt. You just refuse to see it.

  43. As I always say, chinese and Korea fans are crazy and evil. They serious need a visit to mental health, they always want destroy the people that success. They are so weird.

If bullying at school have this level off crazyness, that most be a Living hell.

  44. #WeLoveYouXiaoZhan
Its the power his fans… If anyonehave a problem then just shut up & get ou from our site.. …
We wont allow anyone to hurt him … Remember it carefully….

  45. WOW !!! He’s becoming like his character “Wei Ying” in The Untamed !!! A scapegoat !!!
When all the world is trying to solve the coronavirus threat, some “crazy” netizens are fighting just for this !!
OMG !! These people need to live in the real world, not their fantasies ! If only they could use all their effort for a better cause, we would live in a better place !!

  46. Xiao Zhan is the only victim here. I really don’t understand why Chinese people are venting their anger on him and not on their country’s system. What could Xiao Zhan say to stop his fans and what could he do to influence the system? Blame censorship. If you can’t change the system then learn to live with i, if not just get out.

  47. Wow both sides are petty AF and the comment before is %100 right if they have this much energy put to something more impactful and beneficial for there society and the world don’t just focus on your own selfish fantasies and your own feelings. Wow

  48. Damn, if only fans *and anti fans* had this much energy when it comes to making this world a better place by helping fight global warming, coronavirus, corrupt politics, practically everything else…

    1. Honestly, just reading the news makes me feel sad, people have a lot of energy but they are using it wrong. It’s such a shame that there are people who blame XiaooZhan for not taking action before this became big but hey you blame people for a thing that happened in the past. Who can turn back time? And then now he’s told to take action, no matter what he says, there are people who will judge him. What do they want him to say?
Now we can’t say which are in fault, sinceefvery person have their own ego and that will make things more complicated. Every body idls not perfect; Xiao Zhan, the studio, the fans, than ant-fans, the media, the government, even all of us. I just hope people understand that and stop blaming others, stop questioning, and stop spreading hate speeches. Do you think you’re already perfect or at least good enough as a person? Stop being so hot-blooded and provocative, stop being ridiculously childish. For example, if you know there’s a really good brand but you don’t use it because XiaoZhan is the spokeperson, isn’t it your loss?

For XiaoZhan, i appreciate him being silence, just like the saying silent is gold, being silence means he won’t add any other topic to be discussed (or in this case, quarreled). You choose what action you want to do, keep being you. We all have the rights to do what we want as humans, as long as it doesn’t harm others.

For antis, doing things like boycott and all just makes you tired physically and mentally. Do you think the result will really worth the struggle? What if even you do all of this, XZ keeps being successful? Or even if XZ stops being a celeb, will it bring ao3 back to you? Do yo u really believe that? Just try to let it go and make this like some kind of way to learn more. You can make new creative platform, you can try to access vpn and use it to reach the site, and some other stuffs.

For the fans, what’s hurt about the fanfiction? They just use the name and image of a celebrity and actually let him more known by other users of the site. The owner doesn’t even bothered by it, so why are you all getting so worked up? It’s called FICTION for a reason. It is NOT REAL. Try to separate between reality and fantasy. Why are you trying to play the hero saving the damsel in distress when there’s no one asking for help?

For governments, i think this might be a chance to evaluate the regulations. People need places where they can express their creativity. Every person has different talents and interests, so long as it doesn’t harm others, it’s people’s right to express themselves.

For the media, please do not just trying to make profits out of all this news, because i know that a news about a top-notch star will make a great headline and sold like peanuts. Please don’t give assumptions, questions, comments that can lead people to overreact to all of this. We have a lot of problems that people need to wary about more than this, for examplr in health subject, politics, environments, the world and others.

Humanity over all, we live together in this world. Let’s live peacefully and happily without any needs to blame or corner others. Let’s make the world a better place to live. Improve ourselves to the very best version of us. Work together to make peace on earth. No hate speeches, become more respectful to others, appreciate every little things that has happened to us, every single day, every single minute.
