Chinese actress, Tong Liya (佟丽娅), who is regarded as “Xinjiang’s #1 Beauty”, got divorced from her Chinese actor and director husband, Chen Sicheng, in May, after 7 years of marriage. There were recent rumors that she got remarried to a high ranking government official, Shen Haixiong (慎海雄).
The news was quickly overshadowed when the Beijing Municipal Public Security Bureau issued a notice on December 22 that they had already accepted Tong Liya’s case: “Regarding the recent online rumors, the public safety agency has already accepted Tong Liya’s case filing. The case is currently being investigated. The internet is not beyond the law. Creating rumors and disturbances and other illegal behavior will be investigated and deal with according to the law.”
While the authorities didn’t specify what Tong Liya’s case was about, many netizens have surmised it’s regarding the rumors surrounding Tong Liya getting remarried to Shen Haixiong.
However, the rumors were quickly squashed and removed from Weibo with the exception of the police report. Due to the news involving a government official, even Weibo’s Sina Entertainment account didn’t report about it due to the sensitivity around the subject. Netizens weren’t shy about asking why Sina didn’t report about Tong Liya’s police case under JJ Lin’s post: “You love posting about news so much, why didn’t you post about Tong Liya?”, “You obviously know this isn’t the melon (gossip) we want to see.”
