Miss Hong Kong 2015 winner and former TVB actress, Louisa Mak (麥明詩), was in recently in the headlines when she spoke out about the Franchesca Wong brownface controversy from TVB series, “Barrack O’Karma 1968”. Louisa Mak had said, “Wouldn’t it be better if Hong Kong could give more opportunities to ethnic minorities to perform and represent their own ethnicity instead of letting another ethnicity to represent?”
Surprisingly, Louisa Mak’s comment was met with criticism and attacks from netizens. Some were saying Louisa Mak was being “hypocritical”. The conversation then somehow shifted to Louisa Mak’s educational history. They started questioning Louisa Mak’s results at Cambridge University, where she graduated with a Law degree, saying, “But she only got 2:2 (referencing she graduated with second class honors), she can’t even qualify to get the PCLL in Hong Kong. You think she really chose not to be a lawyer? She joined the entertainment industry only to gain fame.”
In response to the questioning on her results, Louisa Mak shared her transcript from Cambridge University and wrote, “For many years, a lot of ching (師兄, upper classmen) are very worried about my university grades. To each ching, please don’t worry about me. Not high grades, but they’re stable.”
