China Rumored to be Implementing Ban on Period Dramas

Period dramas are the bread and butter of the Chinese entertainment industry. Period dramas such as “Ten Miles of Peach Blossoms” (三生三世十里桃花) and “Story of Yanxi Palace” (延禧攻略) are so popular that it has reached the masses on a global level. A lot of Chinese period dramas are even available on Netflix. However, there is a rumor going viral that the Chinese National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) is looking to ban all period dramas from airing starting now until the end of June. According to the rumor, “Dramas currently airing will need to stop, unaired dramas can’t be aired.”

Update on China’s “Costume Drama Ban”

This “Period Drama Ban” includes series related to “wuxia, fantasy, history, mythology, time travel, biography, palace struggles, and all costume dramas.” The ban is extended to all internet platforms and television channels. Currently aired dramas will be put off air. Unaired dramas will need to go through a thorough review and then determine a new release date. It was reported the first ban was not heavily implemented, hence the stricter reinforcements this time around. This round of the ban includes Talu Wang’s (王大陸) “The Wolf” (狼殿下) and Jackson Yi’s (易烊千璽) “Yan Shi Fan: New Youth” (艷勢番之新青年).
