Former 2016 Miss Hong Kong winner, Crystal Fung (馮盈盈), known for her direct personality and not afraid of stating her opinion on sensitive topics, is in the hot seat for her comments on a recent episode of TVB’s variety show, “Young and Restless” (#後生仔傾吓偈). The show is hosted by Luk Ho Ming (陸浩明), Louisa Mak (麥明詩), and Crystal Fung.

On the 178th episode that aired on September 10, one of the topics was “Miss Hong Kong Contestants Marrying into Wealth”.  Luk started out the conversation as follows, “When girls marry into wealth, they might be perceived as a lady of leisure, but if men marry into wealth, they are said to be a kept man.”  Before Luk could finish his comment, Crystal and Louisa started talking over him, with Crystal particularly fired up saying, “If we marry into wealth, we’re called gold diggers, prostitutes, and public restrooms.” While Crystal is saying all this, Louisa also says, “This [marrying into wealth] is the reason why girls join the pageant.”  Luk replies, “Don’t let the title of “Miss Hong Kong” hold you back.”  However, he had lost the battle as the rest of the female guests on the show had agreed with Crystal  and Louisa to some degree.

After the episode aired, Crystal received a lot of backlash for her comments from netizens and former Miss Hong Kong winners for not living up to the image as a Miss Hong Kong winner.

Crystal’s response to the backlash is that there are double standards when it comes to the way female artists are treated.  She shares that people often times use harsh and vulgar words to criticize female artists and pageant contestants.  She also divulges, “These words are not coming from me.  These are actually what netizens have commented about pageant contestants.  Why is that they can post these things online, but we can’t talk about it on the show.  Perhaps the choice of words was too harsh, I will consider what I say next time.”

  1. Crystal does have a point. Women are called nasty names if they marry into wealth, but if the men are okay with it why should it matter? Women get a nice lifestyle and men get arm candy.
