TVB held its 51st annual anniversary gala show yesterday. Aside from the usual performances, the show included an awards presentation for the “TVB Star Awards Malaysia” and the Singapore based “StarHub TVB Award.” TVB had announced they were not going to hold separate award ceremonies for these two awards this year, which is probably due to budget reasons given the recent layoffs at the station. Benjamin Yuen (袁偉豪) and Mandy Wong (黃智雯) won best actor and best actress awards for both the “TVB Star Awards Malaysia” and “StarHub TVB Award” respectively. Benjamin Yuen won for his role in “Stealing Seconds” (棟仁的時光) whereas Mandy Wong won for her role in “Threesome” (三個女人一個「因」).

Benjamin Yuen joined TVB after winning the 2007 Mister Hong Kong competition. He started off with mainly minor roles and finally got to leading man status in the past few years. When his girlfriend, Bowie Cheung (張寶兒), was interviewed about Benjamin Yuen, she teared and said, “You are really smart, really really smart!” Dodo Cheng (鄭裕玲) then told the two “Hurry up and get married!” As for Mandy Wong, she joined the 2007 Miss Hong Kong competition and also started as supporting roles until she got her chance to star as the leading actress. She cried upon receiving her award and thanked her “Nonsense Girlfriends” and the “Crazy Runner” groups.

It seems quite a coincidence the two won both the Malaysian and Singaporean version of the awards. This most likely means the two won’t have a high chance in winning the TVB Anniversary Best Actor and Best Actress awards. TVB usually gives up and coming actors, who aren’t quite first line yet, an honorary award to appease them until it’s their time to win it. Ruco Chan (陳展鵬) and Alice Chan (陳煒) are the hot favorites to win this year’s awards.
