It’s that time of the year when people start predicting the candidates for the TVB Anniversary Awards (萬千星輝頒獎典禮) Best Actor and Best Actress awards. Last year’s Best Actor award went to Joe Ma, which was a shock since he isn’t signed with TVB. With two months left until the 2019 TVB Anniversary awards, there is already buzz on who might end out on top.
There is buzz around Joel Chan (陳山聰) being a dark horse and taking the Best Actor award after his performance in his first lead role in “Barrack O’Karma” (金宵大廈). The series is still airing and has beaten “Come Home Love” – Lo and Behold” in ratings for the past week. However, it’s rumored that sponsors aren’t confident in Joel Chan, so the battle might come down to Lokyi Lai (黎諾懿), Benjamin Yuen (鐵探), and Kenneth Ma (馬國明).
A supposed insider tipped off Apple Daily HK alleging that after Ali Lee (李佳芯) won Best Actress last year, the company had hinted and explicitly expressed to Lokyi Lai that he would be getting this year’s Best Actor award. In order to raise his popularity, the company has given him a lot of different opportunities, like producing his own show, “A Chef And A Gentleman” (懿想得到). It’s reported after collaborating with Ali Lee in “Who Wants a Baby?” (BB來了), Lokyi Lai helped TVB make a lot of money and was favored among sponsors.
However, Lokyi Lai only had “My Life As Loan Shark” air this year. His series, “Agent C9” with Samm Ko Ling (高海寧) keeps getting postponed, so that hurts his chances a bit. With Benjamin Yuen, he lost around 20 pounds for his role as “Sheung Sing” in “The Defected”, which was well received in China and was also streamed on Netflix. He also won Best Actor last year at the “TVB Star Awards Malaysia” and “StarHub TVB Awards” as a consolation prize. Will he finally win it all the way?
As for Kenneth Ma, he has been missing out on the award every year as he watches all his peers win. He got the consolation prize last year when he won the Most Popular Male Character award. However, there is a lot of buzz around him finally winning the award this year due to his role as “Tong Ming” in “Big White Duel” (白色強人). He’s already got the support from his co-star, Roger Kwok. However, Kenneth Ma might not be seeking recognition as he once mentioned he prefers money over accolades. Even so, he’s a hot favorite with all the series he has lined up. Especially with the Jacqueline Wong scandal this year, it would be a ratings success and highlight if he won the award and then accidentally called out her name when he meant to say Natalie Tong.
Best Actor Award Prediction: Kenneth Ma
When it comes to Best Actress, there are a few names in mind, Natalie Tong (唐詩詠), Ali Lee, Selena Lee (李施嬅), Alice Chan (陳煒), and Kristal Tin (田蕊妮). However, due to Ali Lee and Kristal Tin being boycotted by Chinese netizens, they are most likely out of the running. Selena Lee is earning a lot of praise for portraying dual roles in “Barrack O’Karma”. Many people have said, “Selena Lee is owed a Best Actress award”, but she isn’t with TVB anymore. Will TVB make another exception and let someone other than their own take the award?
It comes down to Natalie Tong and Alice Chan. Natalie Tong won in 2017, but that doesn’t exclude her from the running. However, will TVB let her win again so quickly or promote another actress? She does have another series ,”The Man Who Kills Troubles” (解決師), with Vincent Wong (王浩信), airing next week. Netizens particularly enjoyed their chemistry as the on screen couple in the 2017 hit series, “My Fair Lady” (不懂撒嬌的女人), which earned Natalie Tong her Best Actress award.
Alice Chan was a hot favorite to win Best Actress last year, but ultimately lost out to Ali Lee as she was being heavily promoted. In the end, Alice Chan only got the Most Popular Female Character award. She also only had one series, “As Time Goes By” (好日子), air this year, but it had decent ratings. She also is one of the leads in what was supposed to be one of this year’s anniversary series, “Forensic Heroes IV” (法證先鋒IV), cementing her status with TVB.
However, Natalie Tong still has more edge with “Big White Duel” and the soon to air, “The Man Who Kills Troubles”.
