Real life rumored couple, Xu Kai (许凯) and Bai Lu (白鹿), are back playing another on-screen couple in the new Republican era drama, “Arsenal Military Academy” (烈火军校). This is their fourth time collaborating together after this year’s “The Legends” (招摇). The series will air on August 6 on iQiyi.

Xu Kai plays a rich heir that likes to have fun. Due to his outlandish personality, he chose to enter the military. Bai Lu disguises herself as a male to enter into the military school in place of her brother, who has health issues. She meets Xu Kai at the military school and don’t exactly get along with each other at first. They get assigned to the same sleeping quarters. Xu Kai is constantly picking on her. He splashes water to wake her up and accidentally saw her shower. At one point Bai Lu asks him, “Didn’t you say with a wash board body like mine, I look like a man from the front and back?” Even though the two seem to be at odds, Xu Kai eventually falls for her.

The cast put in a lot of effort and made sacrifices to accommodate the story line. For Bai Lu, she actually cut her hair short. She’s not wearing a short hair wig in the series. It’s reported the crew arranged for the cast to undergo a closed off boot camp-like training exercise prior to filming in order to allow themselves to really get into character and uphold the image of a military person that would be believable to others. They also hired a team to help the cast immerse themselves into the characters from that period such as suggesting them to drink more red wine, listen to that period’s music and watch movies from that era.
