The first episode of the second season of “The Rap of China” (中國新說唱) aired on June 14. After the episode aired, many fans were upset at G.E.M.’s (鄧紫棋) screen time, which only amounted to around 6 minutes. The topic of her screen time even trended in the top 10 on Weibo. G.E.M.’s 6 minute screen time in the first episode is quite minimal considering the total length of the show is around 85 minutes long. Because of the backlash and fans’ complaints, the director of “The Rap of China”, Che Che (車澈), took the initiative to respond to this matter at a recent press conference.

Che Che starts telling the crowd that the crew members told him the editing of G.E.M.’s screen time started trending. Everyone wants to ask him why G.E.M.’s screen time is so little in the first episode. Che Che proceeds to ask G.E.M. if she has seen “The Legend of the Condor Heroes” (射鵰英雄傳), to which she says no. Then he asks her if she has seen “The Heaven Sword and Dragon Saber” (倚天屠龍記), which she says yes. Che Che then explains, “Zhao Min” (趙敏) [female lead] doesn’t appear in the first episode. “Huang Rong” (黃蓉) from “The Legend of the Condor Heroes” doesn’t appear in the first episode either.”

Che Che proceeds to explain, “We only have one female lead in “The Rap of China”. Female leads typically don’t appear in the first episode. Letting you appear in the first episode is already very courteous of me. You’ve already appeared!” Kris Wu (吳亦凡) then responds, “It seems very reasonable, seems extremely reasonable, right right right.” G.E.M. only gave an awkward smile and didn’t respond to their comments. Fans weren’t appeased by his response either. Some of their comments said, “This director makes people want to puke.”, “Being lead doesn’t matter. Most important is to be kind.”, “Seeing him makes me want to hit him.”
