New TVB series, “As Time Goes By” (好日子) stars Alice Chan (陳煒), Ben Wong (黃智賢), and Max Cheung (張達倫). The story’s theme is about the walled village communities in Hong Kong and talks about loyalty, greed, and loss.
The three leads are childhood friends growing up in the walled villages. The two male leads like Alice Chan’s character. Alice Chan and Max Cheung get drunk and have “relations” on the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, 30 years ago. Max Cheung is scared and regrets what he did the next morning. Good friend, Ben Wong, in the name of loyalty and friendship, takes the blame for Max Cheung. Ben Wong maintains the lie for 30 years while Alice Chan is kept in the dark. Max Cheung leaves the village to escape his guilt, while Alice Chan and Ben Wong are forced out. Everything changed from that night on.
Max Cheung’s First Time as a Second Male Lead
This is Max Cheung’s first time playing a second male lead. He is the son of the village chief, played by Lee Kwok Lun (李國麟). He ends up immigrating to Australia after the incident. There, he marries Stephanie Che (車婉婉) and have a 21 year old son, played by Brian Chu (朱敏瀚). Because of curiosity, Brian Chu decides to return to Hong Kong to find his roots. He gets into an accident, causing Max Cheung and Stephanie Che to return to the walled village.
Max Cheung also said he had knew Ben Wong for a long time, but this is their first time working together. Of their time working together, Max says, “He knows I have a lot of scenes this time. He took care of me a lot.”
Stephanie Che’s character grows up in Australia and has a very “ABC” personality. On the differences between Max Cheung and her background, she explains, “Originally, our husband and wife relationship is very good, but I didn’t know what happened back in the village. Later on, he brings me back to Hong Kong and a lot of conflicts happen.” Max Cheung and Stephanie Che didn’t know each other prior to this, but because both were new parents at the time of filming, they became closer and even started having family play dates.
Alice Chan is Always Yelling at Ben Wong
Ben Wong grows up with Max Cheung in the village, but his father dies in Holland as a result of drug trafficking. As a result, Max Cheung’s father and everyone else in the village don’t think highly of him. Their cousin, Alice Chan, comes down from mainland China to Hong Kong when they are about 12 or 13. They all become good friends, but Alice Chan starts to have a crush on Max Cheung, the more reserved one versus Ben Wong’s rowdy personality.
Ben Wong and Alice Chan have a lot of chemistry after working together so much. Ben Wong says of their relationship in this series, “In this series, Brother Wai is always yelling at me whenever she sees me. Because I can’t tell her the truth, I have to take the blame. Even if I say it, she is still yelling at me with my head drooped down.” On having to yell often, Alice Chan says, “It’s very exhausting. Hating someone for so many years and not being able to let go is very hard.”
Jessica Kan Chases After William Chak
Jessica Kan (簡淑兒) plays the village chief’s daughter. Because Max Cheung’s departure, Lee Kwok Lun tries to have another male child to serve as an heir for the village chief position. However, he ended up having Jessica Kan, which is why she grows up being a loud mouth and masculine. On her character, Jessica Kan says, “Later on, I have to act effeminate to chase after William Chak (翟威廉) because I have a crush on him.”
This is the first series for Taiwanese born, Stitch Yu (余思霆), the 2017 Miss Chinese International winner. She plays the village chief’s granddaughter. She helps her aunt, Jessica Kan, pursue William Chak, but ends up dating him instead. She will also have a love line with Brian Chu. She plays a Hong Kong person who has lived in Taiwan for a period of time and eventually returns to the village. Stitch Yu was thankful to the producers for catering the character similar to her background so she didn’t have to worry too much about speaking Cantonese properly.
The series airs on June 24.
