New TVB series, “As Time Goes By” (好日子) stars Alice Chan (陳煒), Ben Wong (黃智賢), and Max Cheung (張達倫). The story’s theme is about the walled village communities in Hong Kong and talks about loyalty, greed, and loss.

The three leads are childhood friends growing up in the walled villages. The two male leads like Alice Chan’s character. Alice Chan and Max Cheung get drunk and have “relations” on the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, 30 years ago. Max Cheung is scared and regrets what he did the next morning. Good friend, Ben Wong, in the name of loyalty and friendship, takes the blame for Max Cheung. Ben Wong maintains the lie for 30 years while Alice Chan is kept in the dark. Max Cheung leaves the village to escape his guilt, while Alice Chan and Ben Wong are forced out. Everything changed from that night on.

Max Cheung’s First Time as a Second Male Lead

This is Max Cheung’s first time playing a second male lead. He is the son of the village chief, played by Lee Kwok Lun (李國麟). He ends up immigrating to Australia after the incident. There, he marries Stephanie Che (車婉婉) and have a 21 year old son, played by Brian Chu (朱敏瀚). Because of curiosity, Brian Chu decides to return to Hong Kong to find his roots. He gets into an accident, causing Max Cheung and Stephanie Che to return to the walled village.

Stephanie Che’s character grows up in Australia and has a very “ABC” personality. On the differences between Max Cheung and her background, she explains, “Originally, our husband and wife relationship is very good, but I didn’t know what happened back in the village. Later on, he brings me back to Hong Kong and a lot of conflicts happen.” Max Cheung and Stephanie Che didn’t know each other prior to this, but because both were new parents at the time of filming, they became closer and even started having family play dates.

Ben Wong grows up with Max Cheung in the village, but his father dies in Holland as a result of drug trafficking. They all become good friends, but Alice Chan starts to have a crush on Max Cheung, the more reserved one versus Ben Wong’s rowdy personality.

This is the first series for Taiwanese born, Stitch Yu (余思霆), the 2017 Miss Chinese International winner. She plays the village chief’s granddaughter. She helps her aunt, Jessica Kan, pursue William Chak, but ends up dating him instead. She will also have a love line with Brian Chu. She plays a Hong Kong person who has lived in Taiwan for a period of time and eventually returns to the village. Stitch Yu was thankful to the producers for catering the character similar to her background so she didn’t have to worry too much about speaking Cantonese properly.
