Youth With You 2020 trainee, Joey Chua (蔡卓宜), released her new song, “Bye请慢走”, which translates to “Bye, please take care”, on August 14. On the same day, she posted a lengthy post about her thoughts on releasing her first song and continuing on this path. She addressed the post as a letter to herself, her fans, and to everyone. Joey Chua reiterated she didn’t join Youth With You 2020 to gain publicity. She also said she would continue to learn singing and dancing and asked for people to give her some time.
When Joey Chua was announced as one of the trainees joining the show, the media started digging up on her background and past rumors. This is when it was discovered Joey Chua was once married. At one point, it was even rumored she had children. Along with her age (born in 1993) and her past marriage, some netizens criticized her saying she was unsuitable to be an idol.
Joey Chua also addressed these doubts in her post. She said, “Everyone would say don’t waste your energy. Such a woman who has been divorced and has children can’t be an idol. Firstly, I don’t have children. Secondly, in this world, as long as you are willing to do it, there is nothing that’s impossible. Who set these definitions? In the end, it’s not people who set them. Then why can’t I have a break through? Why can’t I? My courage will help me break down all the impossibilities. Thirdly, the definition of an idol to me is to bring positive energy to fans during their youth, lead them in the right direction.”
Lastly, Joey Chua thanked her fans and her team. She expressed that while she doesn’t have a “so-called sugar daddy”, she has a very hard working team that has done a lot for her and the song. As for the meaning behind the song, she explained, “Girls are being defined too much right now. We can also have many facets. We are our own heroes, female warriors, queens…we can protect ourselves and fight for ourselves, work hard to achieve our dreams. Courage is our direction. As long as there is courage, don’t even think about blocking me from shining, don’t care about public opinion, don’t care about being hurt…”.
