Joel Chan (陳山聰), Selena Lee (李施嬅), and the rest of the cast of TVB’s new series, “Barrack O’Karma” (金宵大廈), attended an event to promote their new series, which is airing on September 16. The series is a fantasy drama that has elements of time travel and talks about mysterious things that happen in a building between the 60’s and the present day.

Selena Lee plays a prostitute in the 60’s and a flight attendant in the present day. She said there were a lot of challenges playing a prostitute because she’s always wearing a qipao so her body has to stay slim. The second thing is she has a lot of passionate scenes with Joel Chan. She also has to pretend to be very flirtatious with all the customers that come in, like sitting on their laps and touching their hands and legs. She said it was hard to overcome, but as the character needed it, so she let it all out. Another challenge for her was that the character smokes, when she doesn’t.

Overcome fear of cats

As for Joel Chan, this is his first time playing the male lead. He plays a cop in the 60’s and a security guard in present day. When asked if he had any special feelings being male lead for the first time, he expressed, “To me, every role is just as important and should be treated the same. As for being male lead or not, it’s not important.” Joel Chan also thanked this series for helping him overcome his childhood fear of cats. His character has some scenes with a cat. After filming a few days with it, he was able to completely overcome his fear of cats.

Supernatural occurrence on set

Joel Chan also shared a supernatural occurrence that happened on set while they were filming. He recounted a night where the assistant director needed to film a CCTV shot in a back alley. When they finished setting up the camera and walked back out, the car mysteriously got a flat tire and started to rain. When they watched the playback, they saw a white shadow and a sound and a dead mouse falling down. Selena Lee clarified the series is about fantasy, romance and passion, and not a horror story. She also shared that if he won Best Actor for this role, he should get married. Joel Chan responded, “It’s okay if I don’t get it. Maybe I’ll get it 10 years later. It was really happy filming with Selena again. Hope she can get Best Actress this year.”

On his upcoming wedding in November, Joel Chan said, “This wedding party will actually be very simple. All the details will be left to my wife to handle. I am now filming a new series and have no time to prepare anything, but there really isn’t much to prepare. It”ll just be a bunch of good friends having dinner. I hope the guests that night will feel my happiness.”
