Malaysian native, Joey Chua (蔡卓宜), garnered a lot of interest when it was announced she would be joining “Youth With You 2020” (青春有你2). Before the show started, there were all kinds of rumors circulating around Joey Chua’s past. She was married in 2016 to her longtime boyfriend, but there were rumors she had gotten a divorce in March 2019. When she joined the show, there were a lot of negativity and hate from netizens about her divorce and saying how she isn’t qualified to become an idol when she was a divorcee.

While Joey Chua didn’t directly address it on the show, when she first performed in front of the mentors, she broke down in tears talking about the hate she got when Ella Chen asked her about it.

Joey Chua spoke to Malaysian news outlet, Xuan.com, about her first time being a trainee since she already debuted as a singer. She said, “I don’t know how long they’ve been training to sing and dance, so I have to work harder to follow everyone’s pace. The pressure is pretty big.”

Joey Chua also revealed she was most afraid of dance mentor, Lisa. She revealed, “When attending dance class, the worst dancer is always being stared at. Lisa would stare at you with her head at an angle.” Joey Chua said she felt nervous and also “honored” because of this. Honored because she was being stared at by everyone’s goddess and nervous because Lisa is very strict. Joey Chua shared, “She is very attentive. She would adjust my movements and teach me the steps.”

Lisa had mentioned on the show that she used to train around 15 – 16 hours a day when she was a trainee. Joey Chua mentioned the longest she hasn’t slept was entirely “not sleeping at all”. She revealed when they were filming, she slept only around 1 – 2 hours. There would even be a time when adding up two days together, she basically didn’t sleep at all.
Despite this, Joey Chua says the show provides 109 girls with good food. Joey Chua said, “The 109 of us are all foodies. Especially when we’re filming the dance segments, the show would provide us with chicken legs. When we really gained weight, they would remind us. They would give us scales to allow us to control our weight, but they wouldn’t stop us from eating.” Joey Chua had also revealed ever since she became a trainee, she gained 6 kg (~13 lbs)!

Change of perspective on Cai Xukun
Joey Chua also mentioned the changes she experienced and how she has seen a new side of her after joining the show. She also expressed how she has changed her perspective of Cai Xukun (蔡徐坤) after the show. She revealed, “He is really considerate of us. Maybe because he was also a trainee before, so he really understands our feelings. He helped us with a lot of things. Even when we were the most stressed or when we were the most tired, he would say something. It feels very warm.” She jokingly said before the show, she thought Cai Xukun was very handsome. After the show, she felt he was extremely handsome.

While Joey Chua says she doesn’t have the confidence to possess a coveted spot to debut, but she is confident her singing capabilities will improve. She also felt her dancing skills have improved with the help of dance instructors and fellow Malaysian trainee, Yennis Huang (黃欣苑). She said she wants to become a rapper for the next stage.
